Default Cam walked have some questions

Ok so my cam walked on me and chewed up some lifter rollers, on the lifters that got messed up they were tough to get outta the block, but the other lifters that r still in good shape they came out easy, why is this????

Is my blocked junk or is it just the lifters causing this???
Already have to change cam and lifters, really don't wanna mess with block if I don't have to

What do the lifter bores look like? Are they scored at all? Were the damaged lifters just snug when you were pulling them out, or did you have to force them out?

cam tunnel might not be straight/parallel to/with lifter bores. Take it to your local machine shop and have it inspected.

I believe what your trying to say is your cam bearings walked on you. If thats what your talking about then you will have to pull the motor and get it line bored and new cam bearing installed. I would not recommend letting someone just trying to replace the bearing the way it sits. I did and wound up paying for it in the end. Your probally looking at a complete rebuild because of all the metal chewed up by the valvetrain. Sorry!

I don't think it's the bearings, I can move the cam back and forth 1/4 I'm pretty sure the cam bolts backed out

Agree. Your block is probably junk. Mine was.

That is the new retainer plate (countersunk holes). Which bolts did you use and what torque value. If you installed a new cam plate with the old bolts and/or old torque value that is why the plate cracked.

Here is more information: Link #1 Link #2

No this is the one without counter sunk holes. I have a newer one with the countersunk holes so I know what ur talking about. I didn't torque the plate just tightened it up, is it that big a deal about torturing it ???

If you didn't torque it then you don't really know how tight it was. If overtightened, it might have resulted in the cracks but hard to tell since the amount of over tightening (if any) isn't known. I would say get the same non-countersunk plate (available in one of the links I posted) and use a good torque wrench when you re-assemble.

The torque spec on the retainer plate bolts is really light, around 18 lb/ft if I recall.

And ensuring all 4 bolts have the same (correct) pressure on them is critical, as you just found out. If not, the plate is being twisted and can fail.

Some people choose the School of Hard Knocks and learn the hard way. It isn't cheap or fun, but I suppose some find it more fulfilling than reading a book.

You just can not skip torquing the bolts of an engine properly. There are sequences and guidelines that must be followed. Plain and simple.
