the ls1 cam wont help that much, you need to get a stall converter and the 243 heads are deffinatly the better of the two but more exspencive and so you know 799's are the same as 243s. the z06 243's are different but a set of 799's or truck 243 heads would be fine for what you are doing but i would go with a small cam like a 224r from texas speed.

You could probably beat him just by running race gas and take off before him. Or just 100 shot of nitrous and dont tell him.
Lower temp thermostat.
There are many ways to pic up a few hp or to be faster.
Clean all your junk out of your car.
Leave your spare tire at home along with your seats and other items.
Get some GTO spare tires for front runners.
Throw a 50 lb weight in his car when he's not looking.
Go on a diet.

Im just sayin if you just want to beat him and thats it then save your money.

By the way
Happy New Year.

Just to let you know...the cam in your stock 5.3L is the same cam that came in stock 2001-02 5.7L LS1 motors...98-2000 5.7L had a slightly, and I mean slightly larger cam that might get you an extra 1-3 rwhp...you are better off getting a much better cam than a stock LS1 cam.

Don't waste your time swapping another stock cam in unless you go with one of the ls6 cams. Anything else would give you only negligible gains.

Better still, look at some of the stealth cams if you don't want him to know what hit him. 30-40hp while sounding almost stock should fit the bill nicely.

Dude, just get an aftermarket cam...if your worried about valve springs and stuff, get a hotcam or ASA cam and use LS6 springs. They are still smaller lift cams, but will sounds a hell of a lot better than a stock cam and be alot better performers!

Tune it, small stall converter and use the 100 Octane race fuel you buy in the gas station that should do it for you.

Stall and tune are good suggestions, but I beg to differ on the race gas. More octane can only make more power if you are limited on the total amount of timing you can run, which is not the case on a stock engine. The slower burn will likely cost him a few hp - and a lot more to fuel up.
