Convertible Vehicles - For all of you that had to park your cars for winter

Yesterday, we had a really nice day so I figured I would put the top down and go on a little cruise. I never would have thought that one New Years Day I would be able to drop the top and drive around. Sometimes I love living in South Carolina.

Ignore my friend sitting in the car.

Yeah winter sucks. Right now my T/A is tucked away collecting dust until "that" day when she comes out of hibernation for the first ride of the season. BTW clean looking car.

South Carolina is a wonderful state, from beaches to the mountains in the upstate, just like NC, but even warmer! During the winter it is a huge plus as we just had a 12 degree morning with 1/2" snow yesterday.

I love SC until the summer, we have some pretty rough days mainly because of the humidity. I'm hoping to get a few more top down days this weekend. And thanks by the way.

And Hastingsrj, I don't think I'm quite ready to drop the top on a 30* day, but I almost did this morning when it was 40*.

HASTINGSRJ
01-05-2012, 03:21 PM
If its not too windy out, I'll have my top down on a sunny day. With the top down you get the wind noise, instead of the noisey old 12 bolt when the top is up:lol:

#1 rule of convertibles...sunny weather = top down :D

I've gone topless in 15 degree weather. Of course it's rare due to salt and the car is not a DD, but....

I'd be driving my car in this weather too but I spend all the time working on setting up the farm we are renting. Hit 55 today here in central Illinois. Oh and I have drove the car with the top down in sub freezing temperatures a few times...not often but when it is cold before the snow comes I still drive the car.

Where in the middle of nowhere do you live? I do like living in the middle of nowhere though. 10 mile drive to the closest town with a store and 8 miles to the closest gas station. Though we don't have many cows around me but lots of pigs...mostly because we are pig farmers.

Haven't been on much in the last few days because I've been driving as much as possible. It's been in the 70s all weekend so it's been great. I've heard a ton about Cars and coffee, is that something that only happens in the really big cities like Charlotte?

Ya there was close to a 1000 cars. There was a dyno. Two runs for 70 bucks. Got dyno sheet witha picture of your car on the side. Cant beat that. Plus there where some half dressed to barely dressed women lol it was great. Lots of great old muscle cars. Not alot of rice or imports. I think they just told them to nicely gtfo.

Was it the route 66 cruise car show? I know they have tons of older cars and some newer ones in that show. I'll definitely be there and hit up the dyno at least after I build my car...for now I just have the stock 6 cylinder engine but plan on starting my build hopefully this coming summer.

Hastings, what is it like to drive the vert with a cage? I have thought about putting a 6 point in mine because I plan on adding power and I would like the car to be a little safer in the chance of an accident because it is a DD.

A cage stiffens up the car. I have a 6 point bolt in, but dont have the door bars in. I would probably have a hard time climbing over the door bars, with my bad back. My seat is all the way back against the cage, so if your taller than 5'10" it may not be too comfortable for you. You will have to either not use your tauneau cover or you can notch it for the cage. I have mine notched, but havent had it on in years. lol.

What tonneau cover? My top just folds back an I drive it that way. A stiffer car sounds good, but I'm 6'1 so that may be a bit uncomfortable. I am also probably going to put 6le seats in, so that may help.

covers the top when its down.

A cage in your car might be a tight fit for you. I have Trans Am seats in mine, but I am only 5'8" so its not too bad for me.

Tyler_PinkertonZ28
01-09-2012, 01:28 PM
I like that cover! Mine definitely doesn't have that. I don't wanna be too uncomfortable in there because of the cage. I'll call Wolfe and ask someone there.

HASTINGSRJ
01-09-2012, 04:09 PM
That cover is a stock piece that came with convertible cars. I am not sure if it was a standard piece or a special order. Wolfe make cages with a removable cross brace, and door swing outs, which I have. I dont have a need to take the cross brace out so I have the padding over it.

I can go in on the cage too....definitely stiffens the car up. I got the weld in roll bar from wolfe racecraft. Fit great in the car and I have room because I didn't have the harness bar welded in the main hoop so I can go a little further back with my seat...I still have the harness bar to put in later if I ever want to. I also notched my top cover to fit around the roll bar.
http://ls1tech.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=18490&pictureid=62368
That is my best picture to show the cover notched around the roll bar...it had to be notched so half the bar could go into the cover.

^^^ Looks bad ass man!

I am 6'4 260 and I also have the Wolfe roll bar with the crossbar and with the seat adjusted as low and back as possible my knees are not touching the dash but are very close.
Just to let anyone know who is a bigger guy that it is still very comfortable with one of these roll bars in the car.

Tyler_PinkertonZ28
01-10-2012, 08:08 AM
That looks awesome man. What seats are you using and do you use the stock seat belts? I really want to put a harness in mine if I do the cage, but if I can't use the crossbar I guess that's not an option.

carguy_24
01-10-2012, 09:36 PM
I use stock seat belts and stock 1995 two tone carpet seats. I'm just about 6' tall and if I wanted to I could put the crossbar in and attach a harness to it without adjusting my seat forward. I can try to get a picture to show the room from the back of my seat to where the crossbar would be when I get some time.

Yes I love my roll bar even with it being just a 4 point bar. Weather here in central Illinois has been very mild too....hit 55 today again. I plan on taking the car out next weekend too as we are scheduled to hit 55 again on saturday. Hell I may even have it out during the week as it is supposed to be in the high 30s and mid 40s.

Thanks man. I appreciate it. Don't worry, y'all will be way better off than me when it's 115* with 85% humidity in july.

This time of year is actually when my wife drives her 95. Drop down, heat on full blast, cruising to work at 75.

The car gets parked during the summer.
