Default Clean the pistons?

Doing a head swap. I noticed everyone shines the pistons. Why take the time? Am I missing something? Just want to get er done.

Carbon can cause detonation.

If measuring PTV, carbon can give false values.

Scotchbrite pad and carb cleaner. Cover your fenders.

Agree with above. Cleaning the pistons is good towards measuring PTV and or flycutting, which most people do when they take the heads off to replace them.

I'm just changing the lifters. I took the heads off to track down a valve train problem. Now that I have my heads and springs repaired I just want to get them back on. Im catching hell trying to clean the block. The blue scotch Brits pad leaves blue felt in all the ports. I can't find a roloc anywhere. Also I have a dremel and tried the little felt pads bit they keep burning off. There has to be an easier way.

Try a local paint store. I found non-metallic scotchbrite pads there that worked well and they were available in different roughness.
