Default Broken PAC Valve Spring

Broken PAC Dual Coil Valve Spring..

Upon removal I found that the Valve Guide had broken out of the Head..so the Piston definately has damage..

Here's the failed parts..

Total Engineering Airflow Ported and built the Heads with new Valves, Springs and Hardware. I was highly advised by them to buy new components so they can install them and warranty them.

Tomorrow I'm calling them and seeing how well they stand by their warranty. I'll do the labor in putting it back together, but I'm going to request new Springs for all 16 Valves, the cost of a replacement Cometic Head Gasket, Head Bolt Kit, Rocker Arm, and the Machine Work/Parts to repair the Head (Guide, Valve, Seal). I dont think the Piston is too bad. We shall see.

The car was warmed up to operating temp too, didnt hammer on it cold. I had been driving it all afternoon to make sure everything was good.

I still have all my paperwork, Heads were built in March of 2011, I bolted them on in April.

I was told they were Patriot Platinium Series Springs when TEA called me and asked me if I wanted new Springs..all that is on the paperwork is a stock number of the spring, not saying what it is, the only spec is that it's .650 Lift.

EDIT:

I made contact and they are PAC Springs..they told me to pull the Head and send it to them, so that's what I'll be doing. The rest we are discussing.

Here's the results.

The Valve with part of the Stainless Steel Guide on it..still flat and true.

The Intake Runner..

The Piston with a very small mark on it..

In the bottom of number 1 is fragments of metal that shot up the Intake Runner and into the other Cylinders..it's all over the drivers side. I called Mike at TEA and was advised to pull both Heads and send them to him so he can look at them. I have to box them up this weekend, he's sending a Tag with UPS monday and I'll have the box ready. I'm about to pull the other Head off here after lunch.

Thankfully there wasn't more damage caused ehh? It could have easily been catastrophic for that bottom end.

Here's the other Head pulled off..found the rest of the Guide in #8..

This was an IMMEDIATE shutdown after hearing noise..not too much damage, Pistons will be cleaned up easily, Heads are being sent off.

how is the #8 piston and cylinder walls holding up? did you clean off the piston and rotate the motor yet to inspect the cylinder walls?

It's not a Patriot retainer. The retainer looks like a Trickflow part. Patriot uses a super 7 lock, these are the stock dia locks.

I edited one of my posts to what they are.

#8 walls look fine..this didnt happen on a pull, this was a start-up and idle for about 1.5sec..just long enough to kill the engine as soon as I heard the noise, then towed it home.

I shut it down as quick as possible..lol..could be worse.

Good save! I'd clean it up and run the shortblock as-is, hopefully they'll do you right on the heads...

that sucks man i hope they warranty all your stuff and get you up and running...as for the failure...there will always be variation in the manufacturing process no matter how good the metalurgy is. Sometimes there are just freak accidents, I know the process of making a spring is more intense than you would think and any little imperfection in the grain structure and bam you got a bad spring. I read the posts but i didnt see what size cam are you running? That piston damage doesnt look terrible i think you would be able to roll with that after a little cleanup, but in reality i would hope the warranty would compensate you somehow, my buddy dropped a valve on some brand new pistons and after light "grinding lol" it was running like a charm...good luck on gettin her back up and running
