I have an LS2 that I'm going to delete the MAF and just SD tune. Is there much differences between open and close element temp sensors? Here's the two type I have been looking at. Thoughts?

Good question. I am interested also so I will give you a bump. By the way did you notice one has a plastic covering around the end and one doesn't?

first IS 100% iat sensor, second can be used as a iat BUT is primarily made as a coolant temp sensor. the first one will respond faster to changes in temp iirc

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but it appears most of the IAT sensors are interchangable between years and models without issue to tuneability, at least with the 'true' IAT sensors.

The IAT sensor is one of the industry-standard calibrations
because you can get ones that dead-match from Digi-Key
and lots of other places.

The closed one I think is a safety deal, if the leads break
the "nugget" stays in the cage. But that does cut air
access and add thermal mass slowing response.

If you're not boosted SD then you don't need IAT to be
fast. I am much happier now that it's out of the duct
altogether.

IAT effects Ve calculations for Sd.. It also effects engine temp model, 273.15+IAT+((ECT-IAT)*factor).

It also effects Torque model, even for Air conditioning.


Also just like ANY sensor out there, they all have thier own set of offset scalers to be correct.

In our Cummins files we started to put in those values for people to adjust those values.

Maybe when i get time, i will revisit the cals for gm gas and put that kind of stuff into the ls1 based models... Then things can be more exact for you guys when swapping sensors.

Okay, this might be a stupid question and I appologize. My IAT had the plastic piece break off (cage) when the autoparts guy dropped it on the counter. I went ahead and installed it after cleaning the rest the cage off. It was only dropped about a foot. Is this a big deal? Should i replace. The metal piece that hangs looked fine so I didn't worry about it. We haven't fired it up yet so I could replace if I need to.

Yeah. lol. It wasn't theirs. I brought it in used. I was looking for a jam nut for it.

If he dropped it and broke it I woulda made him replace it regardless whether u got it there or not. It may have been an accident but it's what shoulda been done. It'd be good business practice IMO
