Exclamation Need help-HP tuners and VIN question

Planning on getting a hp tuners however I was informed that since my car’s a 98 v6 w/LS1 swap from a 98 also that I would need to get the VIN number from a 98 V8 LS1 when I input the necessary info. Can I just use a random 98 LS1 VIN, and if so, anyone care to help me and supply a working 98 model year please?

I dont think you can just put in a vin number and make it work. You would have to ask that question on thier forum i believe.

At a guess, i'm going to say that you have to have a matching vin to operating system inside the computer in order for you to tune it.

Only Efilive would allow you to have any vin number you want including your 98 v6 orginal one so your abs system works.

Another plus is, that if you have someone with a cable laying around, there is no charge to tune 98 ls1 vehicles.. Even if they have no licenses available.

If you did a 98 LS1 swap then you should be using a 98 LS1 computer as well, which will already have some kind of 98 LS1 f-body operating system, and thus a 98 LS1 VIN. You can read the file out with HPT without licensing it, and when it is reading it will tell you what the VIN/OS is from, i.e. GM Camaro/Firebird (V8) 1998.

thanks. i emailed hp tuners and a tech said the same. once the tuner reads the pcm it'll automically go off whats in the binary file and use that or something.

i didnt perform the swap but the original owner did, im the 4th owner. the 3rd owner only had it for a couple of months(he doesnt like autos and he's a ford guy).

just ordered hp tuners :-). cant get on the hp forum yet to check the repository thats in the sticky up top of the section.

although i plan on checking out the hp tuners forum when i get the software and such, i had a local check my bin file and he mentioned the commanded AFR is set at 11.5 and he said n/a target afr is generally in the 12.8-13.0 range in PE/WOT. is it a good idea to go ahead and set it at say 12.0 and scan and see if there's KR and if not go leaner?

Please elaborate on the "no charge to tune 98 ls1 vehicles"?

Our cables are set up to allow you to flash unlimited amounts of the 98 type ls1 controller. In both 97-98 corvette and the 98 ls1 camaro/trans am.

It does not eat up a license to program them.

Ok. So obviously I've got a 98. If I wanted to be able to do basic tuning. What would I need to buy?

Just find someone selling a used V1 cable on the forums somewhere, They go for about $300 with no licenses left on them. But in your case it wouldnt matter as you dont need any more licenses..

It also works as an unlimited scan tool.
