Default Oil pressure specs for those who want to know.

Lots of people are worried when their oil pressure goes down or is in the 20's. I looked up the specs on what it is supposed to be on Mitchell. Specs are as follows.

With engine at normal operation tempeture, oil pressure should be atleast 6 PSI @ 1000 RPM, 18 PSI @ 2000 RPM, And 24 PSI @ 4000 RPM

So no worries if u are idling and it goes below half or close to the 20 psi mark at idle.

It is written but I know better then that. If it is holding 20 psi at idle, to me that's ok. Anything lower and engine failure will raise it's ugly head.

So you're saying that if your motor normally operates around 40ish or so at idle. If it starts idling in the 20's out of the blue, that's ok? Not. Don't be spreading false information like that.

No not saying if out the blue it starts to at 20 then it's ok. These are just minimum specs that are allowable. Under that u are fucked basically. If with time you are idling and the pressure drops some psi not to alarm yourself. And by time I mean months not days or so. A lot of of people worry that their psi is close to 20 at idle when it actually above specs. And this is not false information, this is straight manufactures info FYI

Mannyman is correct and I totally got what he was saying. I work for GM as an engine builder and those specs are accurate. That is the bare minimum pressure that a stock LS engine should run without causing rapid wear and damage to crucial engine parts. These are pressures that would be typical on a well worn very high mileage engine. Not to say that all high mileage motors will have pressures close to these. He was simply stating what is in GM engine specifications.

Yeah it wasn't. Right for the dude above to just jump on you like that just because he misinterpreted the information. Any person with common sense knows that if one day they are at a redlight and look down down at the oil pressure and see its 20psi, then two days later see it at 5psi they should know somethings up.

Yea those minimums are just guidelines if you got 200k mile motor, I wouldn't feel comfortable with oil pressures like that on a performance motor, only go by that if u are trying to avoid a rebuild

On some race engines(1/4) milers the pressure may go to 0 under full acceleration because of 0 weight oil and all. If the oil pressure drops below 20, say 12, I would be concerned.

Yeah I wouldn't feel comfortable driving around like that either, but that's why its a minimum spec. I had a Lifted 78 Ford Stepside on 44" tires that I beat the hell out of mudding and all that had a 351m engine with. 3psi oil pressure that ran perfect with not a single tick or knock. Not to say that eventually something wouldn't happen, just saying it is possible

technically no such thing as 0 weight. even though it's labeled that, it's really about 2-2.5, but we dont need to turn that into a pissing match.

oil pressure - follow what the guy said about "normal" and if yours shows lower then you are normally seeing then there is an issue. i believe gm says below 7 is a no no. i say below 15 is a no-no.

Jegs doesn't even carry straight 0 weight oil, I know Wal-Mart doesn't. Lowest I have seen is 0w10 from royal purple.

In the bike racing world 0 weight oil is not unheard of.

A 0w30 is not a zero weight unless its cold.

Then at 0 degrees it's 0 weight.
