Default Do tuners block the PCM so you can't read anything from it?

My hawk crapped out today. SES light is on and no one can read the PCM through the port under the dash. Had it tuned at Kaltech and wasn't able to get in touch with anyone there today so I was wondering if it was the norm for tuners to **** block any scanners from reading the SES codes.

That's a first for me....you're saying that you can't retrieve any dtc's? I've never heard of a tuner locking out the ability to read dtc codes....tune files get locked fairly often though. Usually (but not always) to hide crappy work, from posts I've read elsewhere.

I know of a few that will lock you out.

Yep...me too...usually on "exotic" tunes where a lot of work and time was put into the tune. Other than that, most good tuners don't usually worry about it. That's just been my personal experience though.

But are you meaning they lock the ability to retrieve trouble codes?

Yes but I paid for that work and time.

I'm right there with ya,man.......but I can also understand a tuner not wanting to share any "secrets " with other people, should you decide to post your custom tune online somewhere.

"Locking" a tune does not prevent you from reading codes, or scanning data. That's a totally different problem.

Locking a tune only prevents you from downloading (reading) the tune, and opening it.

That is correct. My mechanic cannot read the pcm via the port under the dash.

Never heard of being locked out of trouble codes. Might be something going on with wiring.

The cigarette lighter fuse is probably blown. Check your fuses. If the DLC isn't getting power then you won't be able to read the codes.

I have an LT1 based car. Is the LS1 and LT1 DLC the same?

Scratch that. There's power to the lighter fuse. Damn strange.

I thought the OBD-I LT1s were PROM cars and only the
OBD-II were read / writable? Didn't OBD-II roll on later
than '94?

The 93s were PROM cars. 94, 95 were read/write (EEPROM) but still OBD1, although the 95 had an OBD2 connector. OBD2 became implemented in 96. Kind of a confusing time period it was LOL

Locking a tune can't block out OBDII scanning. Have you tried a different Vatozone from the original one you requested to scan your car? User error?

It's not OBD2, it's OBD1.

The computer died and it lost serial communications with the DLC. Unless there is a blown fuse etc for the PCM preventing it from powering up.
