Fueling & Injection - Just moved to Kansas and they only have 91 octane here!!!

I was under the impression that my 10:1 compression could use no lower than 92. So I have been using store bought octane booster, and knowing that that is not going to cut it I am, for price and usefulness, I need other ideas. Atm ,I am planning on adding a gallon of tolulene or xylene. What do you guys think ?

Try the 91 and see how it does.

You can use regular.

I think that 91 is fine for now , but once I finish start running 4lb of boost I don't think it is going to cut it.

Best you can get here is 91 our 91 = 93 at s.l. your fine.

Cant you get octane booster?
Dickdeandestructo
01-14-2012, 10:54 PM
yeah , the best here gets it up to 91.7 Unless the shit at walmart called 104+ actaually takes it to 104.

All I can get in my area is 91 since the only mom and pop with 93 closed. 91 has been doing fine with a basically stock engine.

Depending on the altitude where you live octane ratings change. Because the air density does not promote burn comparable to lower elevations fuel stations can not meet testing levels.
Easy way to tell is if your gas station only carries 86 octane instead of 87.
Long story short 91 is 93

That is good information. Looks like I have some research and learning to do on octane testing and rating.

I haven't caught them open yet but when I do I will let you know. I drive by there almost every day. This place looks nice, with a machine shop , welding shop and pumps advertising race and watercraft fuel.

it is 65 for a 5 gallon pail of 109 unleaded. The cool part is that they are just a few miles from my house.

Ya. 91 is fine. I'm running 10.6:1 with only 91. 40* and no knock whatsoever. But in my area, the coop stations have the best rated fuel. A lot cleaner, less ethanol, more gasoline.

I can get E85 here. But, it seems like you can't run it with out bigger injectors and pump and a re tune.

Ran 97 octane this week. Really seems like the sweet spot for this low mileage LT1. It is really like going back in time and working with a 94 out of the box. I am using xylene and 5 oz of lead substitute.
On another note I just finished my exhaust inlet piece for my 61mm Cold/100mm Hot turbo. Should be running 4 psi by Feb 10 as I am only missing two pieces to completion.
Last major part is the tuning side, still waiting on cable adapter for that. Gonna use tuner cat and have some one coach me through it the first time.

Where you at in Kansas? A lot of the BP gas stations around Kansas City Mo/Ks have 93 octane

E85 bro
His compression is 10:1 why in the world would he need to go out of his way to run E85? Pretty silly if you ask me.

I never had any issues with 91 really. I have installed many cams in cars. One of the highest hp cam only Z06's I have seen/done put down 580rwhp with just cam and headers on 91 octane QT fuel.

+1 for that, I've seen plenty of big power cars running pump gas with no problems at all. You just have to build the motor correctly... check this nasty C5Z out-
It proves that you don't *need E85 or race gas, just people with half a brain.

91 will do fine!just run it and see how it runs.i dont see why you would wana run or pay for race gas when you got 10 to 1 compression?
Dickdeandestructo
01-26-2012, 07:36 PM
I will have a 13.3 dynamic compression at 4 lbs of boost. That is why I want to run higher octane fuel. Im also going to richen the mix and retard the timing at full boost. Im running fresh but stock parts so I am trying to cover this from all angles.

xylene is working fine and not too hard on the wallet. I think that I have found my answer for now. That and a fifth injector shooting methanol / water.

Oh I didn't know you were gonna boost her... if you're already dead set on getting it setup for boost I say find some high octane fuel for the time being, then switch to a low compression setup. Then more boost and back to pump gas!!

Yeah. This is my first turbo build, I have had one turbo car before, a 300zx single turbo. I learned a lot of from that car. Im more than halfway done but I want it to be perfect when I slap it on.

Man, those are nice cars! I could've inherited one from my dad, but my mom sold it :eyes: I believe it was a 90' twin turbo, the OEM cream looking white exterior, all red cloth interior, 5 speed, T-Top, bone stock... ready to be molested hah. Awesome cars.

Yeah I had an 86 with 60,000 miles. It was a great car, with an a/c delete and removing the exhaust from the down pipe, ran about 8.5 -9 psi. It was a little beastie. Used to beat up on the ragged out 5.0s around town. Alas with the uber cool digital dash and all that it had hella electrical problems and I eventually dumped it off on some one else. To this day I regret it.

yeah the exhaust just spewed out of the turbo, sounding like a giant hair dryer going down the road. Had a muffler with nothing connected to it on the back , so some times it confused people, and they would even walk up and look under the car . And all they would see is a muffler attached to invisible pipes!

Ahah! Nice, give the cops a reason to F*ck off! How big in terms of diameter was the downpipe?

So far, running 98 octane with just intake and full exhaust on a fresh LT1 I am able to spin the tires entering gears 1-3 from a stop, and I am able to bark the tires rolling at 45 mph. You can smell the xylene burning for sure. Also , today I through in some ethanol deposit cleaner just in case I have been getting snuck some E10, it is really popular here, and all the pumps have that stupid warning of "may contain 10% ethanol/alcohol". I try and use stations that dont have it.

Most every place is going to have E10 so its 92-93 octane equivalent regardless...

It was just the stock one that came on the car, I just cut all the exhaust off with a sawz all left the muffler attached. I think it was 2 1/4" . So really it was like a redneck exhaust down pipe, know what I mean?

Usually the best 91 octane is kwik shops and quik trips, they're prolly some of the cleanest. Plus if you have a dillons card you get 2 cents off every gallon. Where I'm from in Kansas just 50 miles south of manhattan we have one place that sells 93 and it just doesn't seem like a big difference.

I think that I will just stick to highest octane possible until i get the compression lowered. 93 plus xylene will do fine for now the cost benefit ratio is suitable for me. Im gonna to go the bulk route and save some in the long run. I bet my engine will thank me, I drive this car everyday and I enjoy driving it everyday.
