Talking Wheeling in Centralia - The "Real Silent Hill"

This is about my 15th or so trip to Centralia. As usual, for those who don't know, Centralia is located in east central Pennsylvania, not far from the former off-road park Paragon. There is a coal mine fire that has been burning under Centralia since the late 60's. The coal veins under Centralia and the neighboring towns are made up of Anthracite Coal. This type of coal is the cleanest & longest burning coal in the world. It has been estimated that the coal under Centralia can burn for another 250-500+ years, and possibly wipe neighboring towns off the map. The exact thing that has happened to Centralia.

This was more about wheeling & exploring the woods than Centralia itself. These are all shots with my cell phone. I'll upload some shots off my D2x (DSLR) later.

The group (My ZJ: No lift, 30" AT's, open front/rear; Buddies ZJ: AT's, 2" lift; Buddies MJ: 31" MT's, lift, LSD in rear Ford 8.8, 97-01 XJ front grill, bumper & fogs, etc.):

Trails:

Branch removal:

Poser flexing:

Very steep, slippery trail with some big rocks - does not look bad at all in these photos:

And back in Centralia:

All in all it was a great time. The MJ had a rear passenger side shock rip off the axle side. That was the only damage aside from the usual brush/tree memories, errr.. scratches.

Here's a fun fact: Who leads the nation in coal mine fires? Pennsylvania

Centralia, PA
Archabald, PA
Laurel Run, PA
Vanderbilt, PA

In total there are around 45 coal mine fires in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. We're a national leader in something!

And if you're looking for an abandoned town you can't go wrong here either. Check out Frick's Lock, PA near Limerick. Plenty of pics on the web of it.

Cool pics as usual. Even though it doesn't seem to change much it's still pretty fascinating there. At least to an outsider.

It's been burning since the 60's. The DEP drilled large bore holes to check the temps underground. These lovely bore holes provided the oxygen to continue the burning. Even without those holes, Anthracite coal burns very well without much oxygen - once it's ignited.

There's an interesting movie about it (called "The Town That Was"), and several documentaries too. You can catch some clips about it on youtube.

Headlights look terrible, I know it's a retrofit but you probably should have left them chrome on the inside

I could give a **** about the headlights honestly. I can see, that's all I care about right now. Same deal on the Trans Am. I can see now that I did the projector swap.

Night vision = Step 1
Aesthetics = Step 2

I already have new housings, projectors and a new HID kit, ready to go. I just need to get the retro v2.0 in gear. Should have it done by the end of the week if time allows it.

There are places to wheel anywhere you live! Do you have a Jeep or other off-road vehicle? If you have a Jeep I can recommend some forums.
