Carbureted LSX forum - fuel pump?

Hi, fellas. It looks like I'm going to be getting my hands on an LS1 to install into my 68 C10. I'm going to run a carb on it. I currently have a GenI sbc with a mechanical fuel pump. I would like to know what kind of fuel pump would be good for my application. The engine will be kept pretty much stock, but with a mild cam installed, so I don't need anything too radical, just a good pump for the street. I also would like it to be an inline setup, not an internal tank style.
I've looked through some catalogs, but there's just so many choices. I need something practical and dependable. What do you guys recommend?

The new GM Front drive system will allow you to run a small block Ford mechanical pump. At this rate you would not need a return line, regulator etc... If your looking for an inline pump just get your basic Holley inline pump for a carbed application.

A Holley blue pump will be plenty and it comes with a regulator

If you're looking for an inline, check out the new Holley Billet series, Number 12-700 (http://www.holley.com/12-700.asp) for your app plus you'll need a return style regulator...

I have had 3 holley fuel pumps red blue black. Get the aeromotive regulated to 7 psi. No issues and I ran mid to lo 10's on motor. Do not go cheap. All my holleys bit the dust in 4 or 5 months.

Carter makes some cost effective pumps that are suppose to be pretty quiet. This one will work

This is what worries me. I've heard alot about the inexpensive pumps giving out early. Does Walbro make a low psi pump for carb applications?

You can run an EFI pump on a carb if you run a regulator. the pumps only develop EFI pressures when the backpressure is right.
I don't know that a Walbro is any more reliable than any other. Seems like lots of guys complaining about their walbros on this site.

A bud also had this problem, I asked him if he pulled the pump down and looked at it. "Nope, just tossed it and bought a new one". He doesn't run a pre-filter so I've gotta wonder if there was junk plugging the vanes and stalling the motor. The rebuild kits are less than $20, so it will definitely be on the order - if - I have this issue with mine.

Walbro had a run of bad pumps, allegedly that's behind them now. Lot's more info on this to be on the turbobuick forum...

Aeromotive 11203. Set at 7psi. Pump must be below tank. Mine have always been and prefiltered. They just make a better pump.

And there-in lies the problem with just about all street cars with factory tanks. I 'had' a Barry Grant HR220 for a few weeks, but it refused to pull suction on my (sumped) factory tank. It's back in the box and the Holley Black is pulling just fine. And all this with the pump(s) located at the 25% tank level. Bottom line is gonna be dictated by pump location. I did find a nice MagnaFuel pump (~$425) that their tech guy said would pull 26" vacuum, but out of my range of 'frugality'...

Holleys have that rep....good/bad. The Mallory has a much more reliable rep. Cant go wrong with a Mallory 140 will last and its on the less expensive side. Aeromotive are nice, but there warrantys SUCK and big $...they also are not recommended for dead heading....

I seriously don't understand why so many people recommend the noisy a$$ holley pumps for such a mild street truck. If you have a race car with loud exhaust, its all good. I personally don't like the sound. Even with rubber isolating, I can hear the drone, as well as the people at the cruise in. I put up with it on the Dakota because I need that much pump to supply my 6.0 and the NOS.
I have used the pump that Pop n Wood and I recommended in a low 11 second truck and my 11.5 Blazer with a 6.0, with no problems. It makes very little noise being rotary design and no need for a pressure regulator. I have a fuel pressure guage inline but don't really need it IMO. Its just there for peace of mind. You could just bolt it on and go as its internally regulated.
BTW its reasonably priced also.
No I don't own stock in the company.
