Default 243 heads work on LS1 with stock cam?

Hi, I have an 02 with the crappy 853 heads and im wanting to go 243 Z06 heads. Is it possible to put these on and run fine with the stock camshaft? It is my daily so im not looking for a cam as of now.

Actually cam isnt even needed, but a tune would be most beneficial. I bet you see 20rwhp with a tune over your 853's.

they are the 853's, i checked the casting numbers. I bought the engine from a guy and planted it in my V6 car, I looked at the intake to make sure it was a LS6 but didnt even look at the head casting numbers because I had plans of swapping them out anyways.

Get the 243's, get them CNC'd... then pickup a cam and new valvetrain components!

I think that running 243s with your stock cam and getting it tuned is a good idea.
It will be more fun to drive, and if you can keep your foot out of the gas you'll probably get better gas mileage too (that always nice on a DD!)

Awesome, thanks for the info guys. I will most likely be doing if I come across a low mileage set. Probably keep them unported for now.

Anything I should know about getting a pair of used heads? Anything need to be done to them? Will my 853 rocker arms work on 243s or should I buy some different/better rocker arms?

This will be my first head swap but im very mechanically inclined, did all the mods myself in my sig. Any estimate on how long this will take me?

if you get 02-04 243 heads, they will have the hollow/sodium filled valves and you will need a different length pushrods. 243 heads from an 01 z06 will not require different rods. also look at 799 heads. they are physically the exact same as the 01 243 heads. they just came on the LS2s and are usually cheaper. the stock rocker arms will work great but looking into the comp cams trunion upgrade. if they are used heads you should at least take them to a shop to make sure that they are perfectly flat and then replace the valve seals. since you are taking the heads off anyway, might want to consider replacing the lifters and trays as well.

Ok great, could I just use the rods off of my current heads? Not sure to figure out which length I'll need.

Had another question... Will my current 853 valve covers work on 243 or 799 heads. if not, which valve covers will work with the 02 coil packs?

If they're center bolt valve covers, they will work. They are all interchangable.
