Default To port or not to port... This is my question...853's :(

So I'm doing my Cam install soon with my Comp 224/224 .581 112LSA, I already have Comp 918's I was planning on putting in. Not too long after the cam I am wanting to either p&p my stock 853's from my 2000 SS or should I get some 243's but then probably won't have any extra cash to port. Really I only have about $500 to work with the heads. I've read some stuff about how the 853's might not even be worth porting, what would you guys do? Thanks.

get the 243s they will outflow 853 any day, plus they bigger ports. You can even clean up the exhaust port and bowl and the intake bowl to make the heads flow more for free. Nice cam you will like!

Yea but ported 853's will not flow as well as stock 243's? And I've ported a TB before but am scared to mess with heads, seems like something I'm not to comfortable doing. Unless its really just basically the same thing as porting a TB.

i would do it to, if cash is tight then go for it, but honest it depends on cost , ai does killer work but it might be out of budget for you, and for the price you can get a set of 243s or 799s it might be worth it to just search cls and see if ya can get a deal. my buddy got his 243s for 400 in great shape, i have seen worked over 853s do pretty well, but compared to whats out there they just are not as good

Professionally ported ls1 castings will outperform stock 243/799 castings. Period.

If your budget is $500, ported 853s will serve their purpose well! they will out perform stock 243s any day of the week. provided their ported properly. Go for it!
