Subject: A/T Shift, Engine Driveability Concerns or SES Light On as a Result of the Installation of an Aftermarket Reusable, Excessively Oiled Air Filter -- 2004 and Prior Cars and Lt Duty Trucks and 2003-2004 HUMMER H2
Message #: VSS20040056
Corporate Bulletin Number 04-07-30-013 will be available in SI on March 18, 2004.
Automatic Transmission Shift, Engine Driveability Concerns or Service Engine Soon (SES)
Light On as a Result of the Installation of an Aftermarket Reusable, Excessively Oiled Air Filter
Models: 2004 and All Prior Cars and Light Duty Trucks
2003-2004 HUMMER H2
DO THIS
First, Inspect the vehicle for a reusable aftermarket excessively oiled air filter
DON'T DO THIS
DO NOT repair under warranty if concerns result from the use of a reusable aftermarket oiled air filter.
The installation of an aftermarket reusable, oiled air filter may result in:
1. Service Engine Soon (SES) Light On
2. Transmission shift concerns, slipping and damaged clutch(es) or band(s)
3. Engine driveability concerns, poor acceleration from a stop, limited engine RPM range
The oil that is used on these air filter elements may be transferred onto the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor causing contamination of the sensor. As a result, the Grams per Second (GPS) signal from the MAF may be low and any or all of the concerns listed above may occur.
When servicing a vehicle with any of these concerns, be sure to check for the presence of an aftermarket reusable, excessively oiled air filter. The MAF, GPS reading should be compared to a like vehicle with a OEM air box and filter under the same driving conditions to verify the concern.
Transmission or engine driveability concerns that are the result of the installation of an aftermarket reusable, excessively oiled air filter are not considered to be warrantable repair items"
Anyone have a TSB# or more info on this?

My tech at the dealership told me that the next time I come in, I should just grab the paper filter before heading down. I haven't re-oiled my K & N yet, but I'm thinking of switching altogether. Any thoughts?

You mean the above or my post? No, my tech just says I can keep my K & N, just don't have it on when I come in for work or they'll "VOID" me or whatever. But are there other air filters where I wouldn't have to re-oil them?

ive heard from many different places that K&N oil is damaging to MAF sensors, its nothing new. unless youre goin crazy with the oil when you clean your filter youll be fine. i make sure i clean the gasket off and all before i reinstall it just to be safe.

Warranty.
If they say all those bad things about just an air filter, what might they say about a S2 H/C package?
I used to like the cotton/oil type filters, but I've gone back to the paper ones myself.

Holly crap just don't oil the hell out of the filter. All they need is a light spray.Case closed.
If you go in for service put in a paper filter and replace your K&N later.

It is true the Holley's Power Shot air filter uses oil that is more "sensor friendly"?
I ask because I have been using a paper filter for years on my TA, but I recently installed the BG Ram Air mod to my system, and they highly recommend using a foam/oil air filter since it helps catch water better than paper filters do. So I ordered a Holley air filter since many say the fit is better than K&N plus the oil is not as harmful?!?!? Thanks for any info...
Tommy
PS BTW I have found no more effective way to get it to start snowing than to add a new mod to my car This winter sucks!

So all of this snow is our fault, eh?
As far as the filter thing - there's been so many posts I've read on this board about people having problems with oil on the maf from oiling the filters, it really doesn't surprise me. For one, if GM were smart, there'd definitely be a real following of this board to keep a pulse on the LS1 - there's certainly a ton of people that know alot about this engine and have tried about every trick you can think of.

Another thing people forget is that K&N recommends cleaning and re oiling of the filter EVERY 50,000 miles. So many people do it every 5 or 10k. It is literally an install it and forget it filter. Leave it alone for 50k before servicing it and you will never foul an MAF.

I think it all boils down to oiling the filter correctly. Don't go overboard with the oil. And clean th MAF with a Q-Tip and some rubbing alcohol when you have the intake off. Problem solved.

Im also using the holley powershot air filter (fit is better). On regular daily driving I put my stock paper air filter on and when I go down the tracks I slip in my holley. That way I dont have to clean it much.
