Take it to the tuner throw it
on the dyno Let it eat! Best break in is a hard break in.

better to have it tuned now. then break it in the rest of the way with a proper tune. I would think "that startup tune" is worse for it over a span of time vs a few runs on a dyno and then a proper tune after. I mean its forged. let it rip. might wanna just change the oil within the first 1000-1500 miles and run a magnet through the oil to make sure everything is going down the way it should.

Get it tuned fast. The break in period is mainly about seating the rings. A rich tune on a broke in motor can have fuel wash past the rings killing the rings ability to seal. If you have a rich tune on a motor that has new rings it's well not good to say the least.

Hopefully you haven't ruined the engine already. Engines get broken in QUICK, as in a few miles. Or a few hard dyno runs. Thats it. You break in the rings, not the entire engine. Just the rings.

Then there's the frequent oil changes at 50, 100, 200, 500 miles. Due to the shedding of metal shavings a new engine sheds internally.

If you've been driving it and its been so rich that it fouls plugs....sorry to say....it could be screwed already.

Gas washing the rings happens fast......

It happened to a brand new 434ci stroker LS6 motor of mine 10 years ago. It needed a rebuild one month later......

Couldn't of said it better, really hate it for the OP if this is the case for him also.

I have a question, im about to go through the same thing. But im worried about my clutch breaking in properly as well. Everything from the motor to rear end is brand new. My tuner said he can throw a base tune on it it get it started so I can drive it around for a while then finish the tune up later.

How have people done this in the past.

Then Im headed for the tuner as soon as they can get me in! Ive let the engine idle two times to temp 15 mins each time checking for leaks and oil pressure, and drove her about 7 miles and then changed oil havent started her since the dam stabilitrk finally went out when i drove her down the street and back. Hope i didnt kill it that would cause me to attend anger management classes

I don't see "cutting the oil filter open" as part of the start up, check list.....

As for "break in" time. We run it at 10-20% load for 20-30 mins. Cool it down, check for leaks, look at the plugs, and then it's HAMMER TIME!

Hmm, while break-in proceedure varies depending on who you ask, I've read it's necessary to make multiple, moderate pulls to around 3-4k rpms and coast to lower speeds/rpm. This engine braking uses crankcase vacuum to seat the rings, no?

Question Start Up

Well shes on the trailer will call to schedule tune in the am, good oil pressure, new oil, no leaks, toped manual trans off, coolant good, and no damn service stabilitrac light. Well my AFR guage said 14-15 at idle dont see a problem there? I have maybe let it Idle for 30 min total, made 2 runs up and down the street as i mentioned above not over 2500 RPM the dyno is next for a tune.

Question not being tuned yet and its a pretty big cam with some idle reversion would that make my plugs black with a suity kind of fouling it comes off with my figer and washes off with carb cleaner?

Oil blow by can do that from the rings not being seated yet.

How can you tell if the rings aren't seated properly? Compression test? I rebuilt my motor about 2200 miles ago and spent the first 30-40 miles doing 0-80 runs at moderately high RPM. Changed the oil and continued to vary RPMs and drive it moderately hard for another couple hundred miles. This was before I got it tuned but I put an A/F meter on it before the tune and while it was running slightly rich, it wasn't too bad.
Since then, the motor has been running really well. If the rings weren't seating properly would I notice anything as far as driveability goes? Or do I just need to get a compression test done to check it out?
