Default How much more effecient is a dyno tune over a mail tune?

I have my ported tb, ls6, Lts, and TDs (erg,air,o2s delete) I need a tune for. Would it be worth a dyno tune, or is another frost tune good enough. It's only about 60 miles away, I know it will cost more but thats not really an issue unless its practically useless.
I've wanted to see my hp/torque anyway and just wondered how much more of an efficient tune I'd get over a mail tune. Could it be a difference of 10-15 hp?

I have the same mods as you and I pondered the same question, I live an hour from Texas Speed so I just decided to give their mail order tune a try (even though it didn't come through the mail, lol) and my car runs strong. No SES light or anything. It really just depends on how much you're willing to spend. But I've had no problems with my mail order tune so far.

I know a mail order (frost) tune would be just fine...But since I'm so close, and the funds are available, It's just an idea for the time being.. Then again I don't want to "waste" my money if it's really no different with just these bolt-ons. If I don't go now I wouldn't go until the cam goes in, in another 2 long yrs...

A mail order tune would probably work just fine for your application, but really, it will never be as good as a dyno tune done by a qualified tuner, it's well worth the extra money IMO.

You said the cash is available, I would go ahead and dyno tune it. Drive it like that until you have all the parts for you h/c set-up or whatever your next step it. Or buy a UDP.

I'd get the dyno/street tune, especially if its about a 45 min drive. Well worth it IMO. Why not optimize everything and get her running to peak performance.

If you plan on doing H/C at some point I'd just go with the mail order. I did gain 20rwhp from my dyno tune when I had the same mods as you, but then I did H/C 2 years later and had to fork out another $450.00.

2 years is kind of a long time... I would want 20 extra h/p for that length of time.

I went from stock to my whole build, was there a seat of the pants difference with 20horsepower gain? they say anything less that 10 in mental.

Funds come from state taxes so it's "free"...kinda. 45 min away...I do beleive I'd squeeze a few more hp out of the dyno over another mail tune and get my ratings while I'm at it.
2 years is a long time.. I'm interested in the whole dyno process anyway, so I'll dyno it.
Just needed alittle input to make sure it wasn't a waste comparably between the two

with just simple bolts ons, a good mail order tuner like ECS will do a real good job on it for 150 dollars. if you have any plans on a head or cam later the very minimal amount of hp a full dyno would get you wouldnt be worth over double that price. Then when you go for internal mods, you have to dyno yet again anyway.

I won't be getting h/c for another 2 yrs. It's along wait for an impatiant guy like me. It will cost around 350$ more than a mail tune but, while it's so close and I'd like to see my hp/torque rating anyway, might as well maximize my simple bolt-ons and see what the dyno experience is all about.

I'm sorry to ask this but what is a mail order tune. Do you tell them what you have and they program a chip to plug into your pm?

You send your computer in and they tune to your mods then send it back to you.

Good info. Do you know I'd they tune 5.3L engines or just mostly LS1s?

Think of it this way, sex with Rosanne Barr (mail order tune).

Sex with January Jones (Dyno tune)

If you don't know who January Jones is google her and you wont be back on this site for the rest of the night.

Most dyno tune shops will tune your car at a significant discount a 2nd time up to a year after if you decide to add more mods in that time frame.

I hope that's true in my case, I just had mine tuned in November and I'm adding a Procharger in April or May. It would be nice not to shell out another $600 on a tune.

Usually depends on what you add. If you do H/C they will probably charge you full boat. But I just put on a FAST setup and they are only charging me $150 for a touch-up tune.
