Carbureted LSX forum - Howards Cams

After a good deal of winter-time cabin fever thinking, I've decided two things about my setup. 1. I'm probably never going to get around to using my nitrous system. 2. The cam I have is not optimal for a pure N/A carb application. So my next course of action will be to sell the nitrous kit and the G5x3 camshaft. I'm looking to order an off the shelf cam and this has exactly the specs I'm looking for (or close enough at least). http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HRS-190265-10/
Any opinions? My setup it 700r4, 3.73 (will be updated this spring to whatever is optimal), vic Jr, WCCH ported 241s, milled to 63cc on a LQ4 shortblock. Heads flow 310cfm. 800cfm DP holley. Edelbrock long tubes and 3" x-pipe with race bullets.

buy a custom ground cam IMO. Not something off the shelf.

Probably just me, but I have never liked/ or had good luck with a even series carb. 600's 700's 800's just come up short IMO. What stall are you running?

Running a 3000 stall right now, but this will change when the 700 won't shift anymore. It's going to happen. I've been having great luck with the 800. It's just what I had available when I started my project. I will upgrade some day, but right now the money being spent has to be strategic.
Custom grind vs off the shelf. This one is just about what I would run if I had a custom grind made. Not sure the added $$$ for a custom would be worth it (even though it's not too much more).
Guess I'm looking for feedback on the specs I've chosen and if you have heard anything bad about Howards LSx cams. I've heard nothing but good things about all the rest of their stuff.

From personal experience, thos cams are great, never had a issue with them, as far as that grind, i think you will love it. It has good intake and exhaust duration and the 110 LSA will be at home with your carb setup for sure. Lift numbers are pretty optimal. Now, if you are like me and not looking to squeeze every ounce out of a motor, just get plenty from it and have a blast, dont worry about the custom grind and buy that cam right there and see how you like it, from there, share with us your experience and results.
I have only ran howards products in the older SBCs, but i have not had a chance to use them in the LS platform, i am sure i will soon with the 5.3 if i find a grind that suits me.

That grind would probably make some serious power with a 4000+ converter.

Ordered it up today. Hope it clears, I would hate to have to flycut...

Yep, Howards took forever for me as well for some reason.

It was about $100 cheaper than the comp cam, so I think it should be worth the wait.

What is the intake centerline of the cam? Eric L

Damn thing finally shipped today.
Honestly not sure on the icl. Fair bet it's not skewed. I will let you know when I get the cam card. Their website isn't working for me right now.

Looks like a good grind, cheaper by about 80-90$ than typical grinds.
I would run at least 11:1 with that cam if were me, minimum.
I think you may have to flycut, but may get away with the dished lq4 piston

I'm running the 317 milled a bit with the trex, he would be fine with the lower compression, just will not get the most torque out of the setup. Will run bad ass I'm sure, hope to see some videos of this cam.

Yea, i know. Runs hard. Still got 317s on there?

Yea, still stock 317, milled .040. Going to go ahead and put a procharger on it eventually, then I would be happy....maybe.

That cam should clear fine with the 241 heads. My cam is real close to those specs, and when installed on a 110 centerline, I had pleanty of P to V clearance. Somewhere in the neighborhood of .080 on the intake IIRC. Installed a little lower...........................well, not so much, lol. Now the pistons are out getting flycut, lol. Eric L

Time to track down a degree kit...

IMHO, I dont know if that cam will clear on a 106 centerline. Its going to be tight, get out the clay, lol. Eric L

Now that I've had to pull the heads, clay will be used for sure.
