I'm thinking about putting one on my 408..anyone have a good brand?

Seems to be a good one that a few people were using on the forum I was reading it on.

But really, do you need it? Hey, just thought of something. I assumed you meant for the power brakes. Did you mean for crankcase vacuum? Some guys here are using modified smog pumps.

What's the exact application??
Is this a race vehicle or daily driver??
Are you trying to make HP??
Are you looking for keeping the charge clean & uncontaminated??

Personally I run a vacuum system for 3 reasons.
It makes more HP, proven fact.
It keeps the charge from getting contaminated which causes detonation, especially with a power adder.
It helps with engine sealing.

When mine malfunctioned this year, it blew the seals out of the intake.
Bought a new one, pulled the intake, resealed everything and finished the year, no more leaks.

For the record, those cheap electric units are a waste of money.
They pull very little if any vacuum on a performance application.

I'm pondering the idea on my 408..using it on the track, street driving I would just run it as-is right now. I dont have any kind of PCV going to my intake..

The little electric dudes aint gonna cut it. Put on a GZ motorsports belt drive, or similar kit. That's what I'm doing.

PCV's are completely against the point in any kind of performance combo.
It makes no sense to purposely contaminate the charge on a motor you want max power out of.
My 2 cents, and what I did on my 1st Camaro, was use a belt drive, set up for ~15 in. and use a relief valve for driving around the street.
I had mine mounted in front of the shifter, open for better oiling, closed for evacuating the crankcase.

Why does it make more HP, is it because it isn't contaminating the air? How is that different then just using a catch can? I'm asking because I don't understand and nobody can ever answer those questions.

The vacuum pump will stop alot of the oil that's getting tossed around in the engine, which decreases windage. It will also help prevent oil from getting by the rings, and allow you to run a weaker ( low tension or low drag ) ring, also increasing power. It also prevents oil from getting into the cyl's and with a power adder, that's bad news, literally asking for, and getting detonation problems.

Typical gain with a vacuum pump will be 10 to 25 crank hp depending on if the engine was built with one in mind or not, and the typical variables.

Mine was just setup for street/strip. I have no PCV draw into the Intake, I have mine setup as a constant vent.

The main hp gain with vac in the crankcase is the piston is pumping in a reduced atmosphere making it easier to move. This allows you to also run reduced radial tension rings in some engines and get some free friction loss reduction.
