Trading my ls1 H/C for ls6 z06 H/C, is it a good deal?
Ok, I am thinking about trading my stock ls1 241 heads and cam for my buddy's ls6 z06 243 heads and ls6 cam plus $200 on top. Just wondering if this would be a good deal? I know everyone would say, forget the ls6 cam and get something bigger, but this will be going inside my 240sx which weights less than 2700lbs, so I really don't need need to go all out, plus I am pretty much broke after buying everything for the 240. I just thought that this is a good deal and would give me some hp.
Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.
Info:
car: 97 240sx, about 2700lbs (will be daily driven)
motor: 04 GTO ls1/t-56
mods: custom headers, y-pipe, 3.5" exhaust, FAST 78 intake, 3" air intake with AMSOIL cone filter, future mods: ported/modified stock TB, TB coolant bypass, ls2 timing chain
goals: 400rwhp, daily driven car and occasional track nights

That sounds like a KILLER deal if the Z06 stuff is in usable shape.
That sounds like a bad deal for your buddy...
I really thought about getting a late S14 before I purchased my 98 M3. I'm an old school 240-280Z fanatic and the last 240SXs were very appealing to me.
Nothing nice was ever available at a reasonable price around DFW when I was looking for my new ride.

Ok, sounds good.
Everything is in useable shape, parts are coming off a running vette with 60k miles. The reason I'm getting this deal is because he is selling the motor. So we are gonna trade parts plus the $200 and he is going to lower the price of his motor by $200 so it all evens out and I get some z06 stuff

Also, would I need to get a tune with the ls6 cam? I doubt it but thought i should ask. And any other suggestions while the motor is apart? Ill be replacing the timing chain and oil pump at the same time as well.
And with my current mods: fast 78, intake, headers, exhaust, and with the addition of the 243 heads and ls6 cam, about how much HP will I be putting down to the ground? Really want 400hp and around mid 400s if I get it tune. Is this very possible with my setup?
Thanks again Tech

Why bother with the LS6 cam? It will be a minor power bump if anything.
While you're tearing the entire top end down, why not go with even a mild LS1 cam that will make a helluva lot more power than the LS6?
400 at the wheels might be doable, but not much more. Even with the 243 heads, that's a rather small cam. You have to get it tuned no matter what, and a tune does not go from 400 to mid 400s. The 400 at the wheels is with a tune.

The reason why I'm not getting a bigger cam is that it will cost more money that I don't have. Pushrods will be switched also.
That being said, how much does a good cond. used cam usually sell for? If I go that route, I want something small like a 220r or similar. And how much can I sell the ls6 cam for? It's from an 03 z06 so it has the bigger ls6 cam. And can I keep the z06 valve train with a slightly bigger cam than the ls6?

For the amount of power you'll get over the ls6 cam 200 bux is well worth it.

I am with everyone else. Get a bigger cam. You can sell the ls6 cam easy and cutting the cost you have to pay. A little car can run a bigger cam with less issues. I personally really like low 23x cams for a stock engine but nothing wrong with 22x cams at all. Great power all over.
Keep in mind if you go with a bigger cam you will most likely need need springs also. I am not saying not to go with a bigger cam, just helping you realize there is more than the cost of the cam.

Edit: looked into a bigger cam, and after I buy the cam, springs, and pushrods it will cost an additional $500-$600 after I sell the ls6 cam. I decided to just save that money and put it towards a new oil pump, ls2 timing chain, and probably a tsp mail order tune. I think that I will be more than happy with a ls6 setup and 243 heads, especially for only $200
