Rear main seal - 89060436 - which way to install?
Hey guys,
I am putting a new rear main seal into my rear cover (engine is being assembled, so its out of the car).
Reading the paper that came in the bag, it says that the seal should say "THIS SIDE OUT" somewhere on it. The problem is that mine does not say that anywhere on it.
Anyone know which way to install it....is it installed so that the lined and tapered opening get wider as it faces the trans? Or as it faces the engine?
Thanks!!

ok, it's kind of hard to see with these pics, but whichever part of the rubber seal is the smallest diameter would face the block. Think of it as pressure forcing against the seal and expanding it.

I ended up going with photo #1 facing the block (inside of cover) due to this thread that I found. The first post is a pic of it installed right from GM as a new cover/seal assembly:

Thanks for the pic, but that is actually the older style setup.

it will say this side out on the seal if its a gm seal its just had to see using a pen light helps but you always face the open lip of the seal towards the motor as the oil pressure will expand the lip and seal it against the crank. you will know if you put it in backward when you prime it or start it. it will **** oil

The actual stamped number was 12602972.
And trust me, I covered every square inch of that sucker with a magnifying glass and flash light. No THIS SIDE OUT anywhere. I just compared it to the one in the thread I posted and did it that way.
Here's the pic I found of the new from GM cover plate with seal already installed. No idea why the pic turned gigantic, but here it is:
