Default 2002 z28 ticking after h/c swap

Ok so i just got my car back from the shop. It's a 2002 camaro with 70k miles. 228r cam with prc 2.5 ls6 heads. Stock lifters and stock rockers. Heads are milled so pushrods are are shorter. After I crank it it will start ticking after a couple of minutes when it get's up to temp. The tick is coming from the driver side and when the hod is shut it's loud underneath the car but quieter up top. What could this be? It has 5w20 oil in it. Thanks for the help!

Why does it have 5w20? If its a hard tick, theres a problem. If its a "busy" sound, then its normal. Its up to you to determine whether it sounds like a tick or like a bunch of moving parts. Its normal to have some valvetrain noise after a larger cam is put in, but a hard tick is not normal. If you want to try and remedy the problem without taking anything apart, put some thicker oil in it.

He just told me that's the oil he used. It's a kinda soft loud tick, the higher the rpms the faster the tick but it fades away after I rev the over 1500 to 2k rpms. I pulled in the car wash and it's just weird because it's so loud underneath. It's pretty loud in the car too. When I listen under the hood I can hear it on the driver rear part of the engine

Valvetrain noise will sometimes be slightly louder than stock. I was able to
quiet mine some after a cam swap w/Mobil 1 0W40. If your oil pressure seems
low or less than before, the oil pick up tube O-ring could be pinched or torn
and thus sucking air....less oil pressure=loud valvtrain.
That cam usually uses 7.4" or 7.425" pushrods to achieve proper lifter preload
(about .080") but milling the heads and gasket thickness can affect this and
must be measured. Improper lifter preload will always create excessive noise.

I would first check for a possible exhaust leak. Make sure header bolts are the correct tq and check exhaust underneath.

Then I would change the oil to a heavier weight and check the rocker bolt torque.

I'm hoping it's a exhaust leak. I thought a rocker/pushrod noise could be heard on cold starts. You can't hear anything but piston slap untill a couple minutes then the fast ramp tick starts in

try to use a big screw driver and listen to each cylinder. I had what seem to be the same thing at it was a broken pushrod. Screw driver will amplify the sound so you can find which pushrod is broken if thats the case.

Remember 228r is on XER lobes which are an aggressive lobe. My Torquer 2 had me in the hunt, but just ended up being the typical "sewing machine" noise, but amplified by the lobes. I had my header bolts retorqued 3 times before accepting the noise. Preload was .080 as well with all valtrain pieces in tact.

Check the wear pattern on the top of the Valve Stems.. that would at least give you a checkpoint on pushrod lenght.. if not centered as you cycle the ending.. you got incorrect pushrods.

Make sure all the spark plugs are tight. Had a similar noise in my '96 T/A ended up being one of the plugs loss. Hope it's something simple.

Jeremy Would yours tick at start up? I know it's not pushrods because it takes about 5 minutes to start ticking

Yes mine would tick at start-up. I currently have a tick I am trying to chase down with my new h/c/i setup. My current tick does not start until a few minutes after cold start, I'm thinking one of the new ls7 lifters is going bad.

Yeah I'm gonna put some 10w40 in it. I listened to it again today and it's loud under neath the car and sounds like its coming from the driver side rear. When hood is shut it's not as loud but is much louder under the car. Very confusing, oil pressure is great.

Did you use paper gaskets with the headers?? If so, thats probably your problem. go back to the stock multi layer steel gaskets. They are far better than paper gaskets. An exhaust leak can sound like a bad lifter tick.

Check where the Y meets the headers. Mine has leaked from there and I've mistaken it for valvetrain noise.

100% agreed.

Try a 5W30 synthetic. I run Pennzoil Platinum and the valvetrain noise is pretty minimal.
