Cleaning a short block
OK, I have an 02(I think) LS1 engine from a Camaro. When I bought it, it had already been disassembled down to the short block. I have cleaned and prepped the heads for reassembly, but I still need to clean and prep the deck surface, then clean up the whole short block. It's been sitting in a corner of a garage and has lots of dust, bugs and debris in it because it wasn't covered.
I know this is an aluminum engine, but I intend to paint the block and heads for easier clean up. So, my question is, what's the best way to clean the whole short block inside and out? If I clean the internals, what's the best protectant I can coat it with?
I also realize I'm going to have to prime the oiling system before startup.
