Default remote mount and intercooler

I have searched a few different places and came up with different opinions.

So, the question is:

Does a remote mount turbo (4-7#s of boost) need a front mount intercooler. Or is the length of the return pipe under the car enough to cool the charge?

4-7 lbs generally doesn't need an intercooler even in a front mount setup.

The length of pipe doesn't cool the charge as well as an intercooler. 10 feet of 3" diameter charge pipe has about 94 square feet of surface area. An intercooler will have many many times that amount. But with such little boost, your charge air won't be overly hot when it gets to your intake anyways.

Im pretty new to the turbo game so I appreciate all the help guys. Can you tell me if i installed everything and set boost around 5#s (non intercooled) would it be safe to drive 1/2 hour to my dyno guy, or is it not recommended to drive at all with having a tune?

You shouldn't drive it, but if you do, don't even touch boost. If you make even 1#, say goodbye to you number 7 piston. I did the same thing. Anyway, I'm making about 9#s and I don't have an IC. You'll just notice some power loss in the summer. Much higher IATs. Its all in the tune. What are you doing for injectors? You'll have to get at least some 42s and a fuel pump. If you did upgrade already, driving will be impossible with out a tune.

Thanks for the help mconway. As Im learning more about this I think I might have to put the turbo project on hold and go with a cam/pushrod/spring/rocker swap. I believe I can do this cheaper for now and upgrade to the turbo set up later

I thought I read somewhere that you could run stock fuel system if its only a few pounds of boost. It may have been wrong, but I dunno. So say I set boost at 4 pounds, would I still have to do injectors and pump?
