Default motor diagnosis/work.. what kinda costs to expect?

So one sunny day Im driving to work and all of a sudden the motor started banging and rattling LOUDLY and died... I lost my job a couple of days later.. Life then continued to kick my *** both financially and personally for a few years.

Long story short... Ive got a 2000 ss that has been sitting in storage, untouched and neglected for a few years.. But im at a point now where id like to get it running again. For all i know the motor is junk.

What kind of cost can i expect to have it towed to a shop and diagnosed? Better to pull the motor out myself(never done) and then take it in somewhere?

Just trying to get a ballpark idea.

~$1500 right off for removal and reinstallation. It'll go up from there based on what is found.
