Help: Girlfriend wants a diesel truck
So my five foot tall 100lb girlfriend is dead set on getting a FORD F250 Diesel or bigger. She currently drives a 15 passenger E250 van. She is looking to purchase within the next 8months to 1 year.
I was looking for some information as I have never owned a diesel vehicle nor do I have much knowledge pertaining to them. This vehicle WILL be a ford.
1. How many miles is too many, I know diesels can last a long time but is it worth the cheaper price to get one with 150,000mi as opposed to 50,000 miles
2. What are common issues with the bigger Fords (besides rust and having a blue oval on it)?
3. Normal maintenance costs?
Shes dead set on this so any information that will help me, to help her with the buying process is appreciated.

6.0 head gaskets 6.4 rings 6.7 urea I would recommend a 7.3 99-2003 if she is dead set on a ford
But get one with a blown motor and swap a cummins in it. After I get mine sold I'm done with the 4.40 a gallon and 15 mph

my uncles 2000 7.3 is at 285k right now and its still his dd, and his wifes excursion limited is over 200k and still strong. maintenance costs shouldnt differ too severely. ive never seen any problems first hand (that were major). im not that helpful but i will def stand behind a ford diesel. i wouldnt recommend buying over 150k and i would bring a mechanic if you arent sure what to look for

first do not buy a ford 6.0 powerstroke diesel they are junk. the 7.3s are very good but harder to come buy now. the 06-07 duramaxs are good trucks. all the new diesels have had some trouble meeting the new emission standards. unless you tow a very heavy better to just go gas. the power of the new diesels are great but its a steep price to pay. i would do alot of research before i bought a diesel. they dont get the great fuel milage they used to.

Whatever you do, dont get a 6.0.. I had a 7.3 and a 6.0 and I would pay a million dollars to have my 7.3 back. And oh yeah, if anyone tells you that the 6.0 is OK as long as you dont beat on it or modify it, kick them in the mouth.

98.5-2002 Ram CUMMINS get my vote. I have had a couple as well as 7.3 powerstrokes and the cummins wins hands down. Love a Powerstroke but the fuel prices will kill you. I was getting 25 mpg's from my last '99 24V 5 speed QCSB with an edge EZ module. I just suggest upgrading to an Airdog fuel system as the lift pumps are prone to failure causing the injector pumps to fail.
Just my opinion.
And look for one WITHOUT the 53 block.

Is there a reason she's dead set on a diesel truck? I mean if she's not towing anything...
I know they're pretty awesome, powerful, can be made fast, sound nice, etc., but with fuel prices and an uncertain economy I wouldn't buy a truck unless I needed the capability.

I know people bash the 6.0L, but if they are well taken care of, and aren't left idling, they don't have many problems. They are also cheaper because people are afraid of them. I have over 150k miles on mine and I've only replaced the EGR twice and trans temp sensor, and the only mods I have are exhaust and cooler. Plus I have the Edge computer mounted to my dash so I can monitor the trans and coolant temps. Its awesome in the snow too!

my dad and i run a ford powerstroke diesel specialty shop. they are fun to own but any 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck is not a cheap vehicle. the 6.0s have their problems, alot of them are avoidable, they are a very misunderstood engine. i own a 2006 6.0L personally, i have headstuds, blocked egr cooler, a coolant filter kit, 2003 model year turbocharger, mbrp turbo back and innovative diesel extreme tuning.
