Headers, CARB approval?
Well i just found out that QTP LT's are not CARB approved, so therefore not smog legal, which really really pisses me off cuz i really wanted the best. But **** it does any1 know of a really good set of headers that get CARB approval. I want the best!!!

I believe shorties are the only header that is CARB approved. With your 02 manifolds, you'll see little, if any gains with shorties over the stockers.
Do they actually check CARB numbers where you live? Or maybe there's a "friendly place" you can go for inspections?

Yeah, no CARB approved LT's are available. And I believe that there are only 2 CARB certified shorties available. JBA's and maybe Bassani's - not sure of the second one though - but I don't think the Hooker's are CARB certified - but check and see. In my opinion - and I researched them because I almost went with the JBA's - the JBA set-up is the way to go if you have to choose a CARB certified header and you can get them with ceramic or titanium coating if you want and they bolt right up to your stock Y pipe. It is my understanding from what I found that you can see an 8-10rwhp gain which may be worth it if your trying to get the most out your car and still not have any trouble come inspection time. I must note though that these shorties are pretty pricey - but can be picked up from time to time on the boards at good prices. About the best price I saw for JBA's new was $750 coated. But I have seen 2 used sets and even 1 brand new set go for $300 on the boards. Be sure to do a search, for 'JBA headers' in the 'For Sale' sections as there was a set on here that was coated for $300 about 3 weeks ago and I don't know if the guy ever sold them. Good luck!

I thought Bassani only made a midlength (but I've never
heard of anyone using these). They look pretty
decent quality in the pictures though and I'd love
a legal mid-length.
GM touted its close-coupled cats as one of the magic
bullets that let them make these late models' HP and
still meet emissions. I don't know if a mid-length catted
header maker could get type-tested and obtain an
EO or if they'd fail on science. But I wish one of 'em
would at least try.

i actually just got done doing a test emissions um...test lol. my buddy owns a shop and he let me use it to see if i could stay "smog legal"..passed with flying colors. I live in Northern Va. our testing is a lot more difficult than the rest of the state because of its high population and it is not quiet as difficult as Cali, but its damn close i've been told. as for teh sniffer test...the lt's with cats will pass, no problems (depending on which highflow cats you go with. Some i have heard flow a bit too much) teh visual test...not a chance in hell. Luckily i have a few friends who own or run shops locally so when time comes for inspection stickers and emissions tests they pass everything for me. and before i made these friends...wheni had a msutang with long tubes with straight pipes, i just came prepared...Ulyses S. No they are not carb approved because they are NOT a shorty (they move the cats back), but unless the tech actually looks for a carb number you might be able to get them to pass, since they are not LTs the tubes don't hang down where you can see them under the car. It looks pretty stock from underneath unless you actually know what you're looking at.
But this is really a non-issue for people everywhere except CA. I think CA is probably the only place that you will fail with LTs just because of the visual....

well i would have cats.... its just that the lt's push em back so they fail the visual, and bs shorties dont do ne thing for the ls1 as u already know i am sure, and **** its only once every 2-3 years i would have to swap em out for the test. so it sounds like a good idea and worth doing.
