Hello everyone,

I've acquired a L33 that has some rust in a couple of cylinders, and a very small knick in number 1. I believe it may have been due to a head gasket issue (seller had taken one head off previously, showed me the rust, then actually rotated the block a few revolutions...).

I am located in Myrtle Beach. I plan to rebuild this engine and install in a 78 Firebird, with turbo charging in the future. I want to keep the bores as small as possible.

Does anyone have any recommendations of how to accomplish this, or know of a local shop that can help? I'd like to find out the smallest oversize I can go prior to the work, so I can have the pistons at the shop when the work is actually done.

Thanks!!

Dave

How deep is the nick? From you're description it sounds like something that can easily be cleaned up by the machine shop. You may not even need any over-sizing parts if the nick isn't real bad. I've cleaned up iron liners in alum blocks that has a nick deep enough to stop your pinky nail with no issues.

Any reputable machine shop can take care of that, but I'd make sure you find somewhere that has LSX experience. If a machine shop says "no but we'll figure it out", take it elsewhere. 1 good indication of whether or not your machine shop has any experience with these engines in general is if they have a torque plate or not. Call around until you find someone that has one and go there.

Damian,

Thanks for the quick reply. I just checked, the nick does not stop my pinky nail, just kind of feel it. It is about 2 1/2 inches down from the top of the cylinder.

Thanks for the info!!

Dave

Has anyone had a LSX bored / honed at a machine shop within a couple of hours drive from Myrtle Beach? I'm having a difficult time finding a local shop.

Thanks for your help!
