Default oil pickup clearance

I have a 05 4.8 I am putting in a 55 belair I got the pan cut down yesterday I am using the truck pan. Before we weld the bottom back on I am going to finish the pickup tube shortening. What is the correct clearance on these ls motors? Right know I have it just tacked and I have 3/8 clearance. Want to make sure before I final weld anything.

When I check clearance with my RetroLSx (now Holley) pan.. I put some clay on the pickup and I had almost 3/4" between the pan and pickup.

well.. too little can cause engine starvation. I have read of that happening before. I had always heard or thought 1/2" was the correct clearance.. just saying..

I did a bunch more searching and am reading on here were .300" is the correct setting. So I may just double check my measurements and go from there.

1/4" to 3/8" is generally considered ideal. .300" would be right between the two.
