Im going to post in the wanted section but figured I would post here as well. Im looking for a gen 6 block for a 496 build and was wondering if anyone here had a good lead on where to find a bare gen 6 big block.

Main question is How far can the Gen 6 big block generally be taken as far as bore and stroke. Is 496 build best plan? or is bigger possible? Also are all gen 6 4 bolts?

I think the biggest issue is finding aftermarket parts for the 8.1 and your best bet is to find a escalade that had one as a option in a junk yard somewhere.

havent seen cranks pistons or rods for these engnies so good luck on changing the internals. they were quit commenly used as a marine engine I belive so you might can find some that way, i think the majority of the aftermarket is marine as well

I was led to understand that the most of the components where interchangeable..except stuff like front cover-oil pan and some other minor things.
I have also been told that the Gen VI is a 7.4 block..I keep hearing all sorts of stuff Anyone have the right answer?

Looks like I need to do a little more research.

ok the second poster is confused. You ant to build a gen vI stroker right?
60 over i think is max on bore, best thing is have them sonic check the cylinder walls
bore x bore x stroke x .7854 x # of cylinders
so .060 over is
4.310
4.250 stoke crank
will get you
496
Whats also nice about the gen vI is you can convert it to run on a ls1 pcm. gm mde a 24 x crank reluctor and you use the distrubutor as the 1 x cam sensor

I saw Gen VI blocks on sale for just under $1700.Sorry.I can't remember where. It was an add in Hot Rod or one of those magazines.I'm not sure if I would spend a lot of effort finding one.The extra cubes are nice but a well built stroked 454 will make just as much power and parts are cheaper and easier to find.I just finished rebuilding my ZZ502 after finding a wornout thrust bearing.

This is the best part really
http://www.dartheads.com/products/engine-blocks/chevy-big-blocks/gen-7-chevy-big-block.html

Dart saw the need for these engines because the industrial part of this nation needs a large displacement engine that makes a huge amount of tq with little maintenance and can be ran at a good RPM (4000-5000) for hours on end with no problem. That was the 8.1L. So now they make blocks, they are working on heads I hear, and maybe some intakes.

So if you bought a regular 454 could you adapt a LS style computer to it? If yes, would be a lot less expensive and easier to get internal parts. I have a brand new Dart block, with all the internals to build a 540, Callies Dragonslayer crank, Diamond pistons, Manley rods, bearings, Dart Pro 1 heads with CNC chambers, valves, rockers, pushrods, springs, Titanium retainers, valve covers, intake and so on and I'm just over $7,000 in it so far. Everything is brand new except for the intake, rockers and stud girdles.

And I'm kicking myself in the butt now because I found a running 600+HP LSX engine I can get for $6,000 complete, PCM and all. Dyno time only. Was built for a sand car and the guy wants to get out of it. Would be a natural for my 95. Kick-kick.

^ if you want that to happen, look to EFI Connection. They can do all that and its a REALLY trick setup.

Or use a gen VI BBC and buy the parts even cheaper from the factory
You can also use an MSD 6010 LS box to run the igniton side and a megasquirt 2 to run the injection. Which the software is free and is much easier to tune.

I was thinking of doing something similar, but just use the computer out of a suburban or something. I already have the software (HPTuners), what would be the advantage of using the MSD & Megasquirt?

xx ED xx,

Is that an L21 or an L29? What are the details on that project? Feel free to PM me.

The problem with the 8.1 is lack of interchangeably. Heads are different so your limited to stock or stupidly priced aftermarket heads, if you can find them.

Personally, I'd build a 7.4 out of an 80's/90's vehicle. Older more available heads will work along with most other older big block parts. The Volvo pinta engines are nothing but a pain in the ass.
