Default Black soot under hood?

I have had a faint white smoke coming out of the engine bay lately. Very faint smoke. Since it started, black soot has accumulated on the bottom side of the hood. Can transmission fluid do this when being burned off? I noticed a small puddle accumulate on the driver side end of the radiator when I jacked my passenger side up yesterday

That or an exhaust leak. I had the same thing when one of my air injection tubes on the header was leaking and it left black soot on the underside of the hood and was so hot it actually cracked the paint on the surface of the hood as well.
