Default Check out my LQ4/9 build.. offer your opinions.

First off this is going into my truck on 38s not a car, so torque is a greater achievement than HP.

I bought a LQ4, (so i thought) pulled the cam and found that the cam bearings felt like sandpaper.

I'm in the midst of the rebuild now, pulled a head and discovered that I think* it's actually a LQ9 (flat tops, no cross imprinted on piston top)

So, my current thoughts are as follows:

Basic rebuild
220/220 .581/.581 114 lsa cam
new lifters/trays
considering rebuilding the 317 heads with 3 angle valve job springs etc.
Truck intake
Factory injectors
Headers
tune (obviously)

Would it be worth saving up the coin for 243/799 heads? Or in this application should I just stay with what I've got? I have no intention on ever going FI..

I would keep the 317's and mill them a little when you do the valve job, The 317's flow just as good as the 799/243 heads. You might want to go bigger on the cam, Thats mild for the 5.7L let alone the 6.0L. I would also throw in a ls2 timing chain and a ported ls6 oil pump.
Any pics of your tuck on 38's.

I kinda wanted a bigger cam, but I got it and the springs brand new for 200$ plus a tank of diesel..

I figure if I'm not happy with it in the long run I'll switch it out, or maybe I'll just suck it up and pick another cam now...

Hold please for some pix.

This was before:

This is the current state, still not anywhere close paintwise.. no real rush tho. No motor to go back in. ha

Boggers will be gone, switching to militaries. Truck is going from play toy to super clean DD.

Looks sweet, My buddy had a 85 when we were in high school. Brings back some old memories beating on that tuck in woods with the top off. Should be a fun toy with the 6.0L under the hood.

Been doing some research on the 317 ptv problems with big cams...

Since its a lq9 not lq4 is it even worth milling the heads down go 66cc chambers? Or will that cause too high C.R. for pump gas?

I've been looking into cams too, I am considering at the very least calling About a custom grind from eps

Right now I love the 234/246 but Idk if its way too big and will cause cam surge problems with the4 speed.

Thoughts?

For your setup id look at something like a 224/230 .595/.595 110-112 lsa and mill about .020" off the 317's to bump the compression up alittle, but not go crazy

Well, got some monies saved up..

Motor got dropped off at the shop, spend all day working on the heads. Been doing some more research.. couple questions

Bolts: Mains re-usable?
Side mains- NOT re-usable?
Rod bolts- NOT?

One of the guys at the shop was telling me the stock rods are a extreme weak point.. and I should replace them?

I thought I read that stock rods with Kaltech? bolts is good to 700HP?

I'm fairly certain I'm going to go with a VRX4 cam, decent size, sound is what I want..

With that cam is it worth me doing the Rocker trunion upgrade? Or is the lift low enough that I won't have an issue (thus saving 150$)

Can i safely assume 7.4 pushrods will be ok? I ordered a Pushrod checker, just figured I'd ask.

I told them to get me Coated Cam bearings... figured that was smarter than standard cam bearings.. ok decision?

Don't reuse the main bolts (4 big bolts per cap) The side bolts are fine to reuse. I would throw a set of ARP rod bolts in just to be safe.
The rocker upgrade is nice insurance, and I would check your push rod length just to be safe. The coated cam bearing wasn't a bad investment either.

I thought the ARP rod bolts would require machine work? Or have I misread something?

Thanks for the reply..

looks like my K5, except mine is on 33's

what you doing with the boggers? selling them?

The ARP's do require machine work, but nothing out of the ordinary. just a resize. In your case, I would get your cam in, and check PTV with the current heads, then decide how much you can safely mill.

Boggers got sold, used the money to get the jumpstart on the motor.

I actually have a gen 4 5.3 laying around, aren't those rods the stronger ones? Any reason I couldn't swap em on the LQ9 pistons? I think I remember that the 4.8/5.3/6.0 had the same rod lengths...

Not 100 percent sure, but I know the Lq9 rods and pistons are floating pins, and I'm not sure if the 5.3 gen 4 rods have floating pins or not.

Kind of an older thread but, yes the gen 4 has floating pins. Any truck engine 2005 and newer got the better rods. There's no reason why he couldn't switch them, but I ssume by now the engine is out of the machine shop.

How's the build coming along?

Keep that cam. A truck that big will HATE anything bigger than a 224. I speak from experience on this.

Yup, motor is done... Ended up going with a 228R.. haha we'll see how streetable it is.

No real updates, paint is still not done, wiring isn't finished. School took priority and this got covered in dust. Soon as any legit progress is made, updates will be shared.
