Default LS3 valve spring problems...HELP!!!please

Ok everyone, I've got a set of off the shelf GM LS3 heads for my carburated LSX Mustang project.

Pat G spec'd me a cam and I got the TEA .660" lift valve springs as recommended. Was told to set the spring height at .050"-.080" before coil bind.

Well, that would be 1.810" to 1.830"

My problem is there's only 1.770" available. The machine shop said I'd have to cut the spring pockets, use offset valve locks (if available) or by .100" longer stem valves.

Has anyone else had this problem?

TIA

there are a couple of sponsors (and a thread very recently) that sell valve spring shims in assorted sizes to dial in your installed height.

Thanks for the response. My problem is the spring height is Too Short with NO shims.. I need cut instead of raise.

I just read your other thread. Have you asked Pat G what the best way to go for that would be? It seems the info in your prior thread concluded you could machine the base, but SDPC says not to. So you either need different valve stems (which I think theres probably an easier route) or offset locks.

Hell call TSP, or EPS and see what they reccomend.

You could sink the valves in the heads some and use +.050 locks. Although if you are running stock rockers the stock locks seem to work better (valve rotation). Or just buy longer valves.

Yes stock rockers. I've called around and a few have recommended using a different spring kit. Comp actually recommended their 925 springs, said they'd be about 140 on the seat at 1.780", so a little more with the 1.770" I have to work with.

Ugh

Livernois has springs rated for .660 lift, not sure on their specs though. Theres so many springs available surely you can find the right set.

if +.050" locks are available I`d go that route. I had a couple that were .010" too tight upon assembly, and I ended up cutting the locators down that much to get the installed heights PERFECT.

The main reason why people recommend setting up the springs .050"-.080" before coil bind is not for the pressure it creates but for the stability it creates for the spring at high rpm. NHRA and NASCAR has been doing that for years.
