Ive been driving Japanese cars my whole life. Im used to their direct, quick responsive transmissions. Now I have a LS swapped 240sx and my t56 is robbing my enthusiasm and confidence in racing the car. It has a stock resurfaced corvette flywheel and a simple metal rod for the shifter. Im sure a light weight flywheel will make a big difference but what can you guys suggest on shifters? Will they make it so it doesn't feel like Im shifting a floppy tractor? suggestions wanted

Idk man mine isnt a floppy tractor. I run a hurst shifter but even the stock wasnt like what you are stateing.

If you have the base shifter, it is horribly sloppy. The factory Hurst option is a HUGE improvement. And then there are aftermarket shifters, usually used with short shift arms, such Hurst Billet Plus, Pro 5.0, and MGW that get a lot of positive reviews.
Just beforewarned that the price of precision on most of the aftermarket shifters is increased notchiness. Bottom line is that a transmission that handles the torque load that a T56 can is not going to feel like a Euro or Japanese four or six cylinder tranny.

I have had the pro 5.0 shifter and hurst billet, both improve it a bit, but by no means is it a smooth shifting S2000 tranny or something of the sort.
The shifts are still kind of long even with a short throw shifter on it...

before I had the LS1/T56 in my 240 I would make fun when a camaro would miss gears, but now I see why they miss gears, definitely does not shift like any Jap car, I've got a pro 5.0 and lightened flywheel, spec 3+ clutch, can't really shift as quick as I want but I don't miss gears much, my next option is faceplating so I can shift as fast as I want, good for drag won't work on a road course.

I had a stock Hurst shifter and it was pretty mediocre. Shifts were pretty solid but really really long. Look into an MGW shifter, I have that now and really shortened the shifts up, its more solid and when the transmission is warmed up it not notchy at all (pro 5.0 is very notchy in comparison).
Also look into a tick master cylinder, can really help when shifting in the higher RPMs:
Run good clutch fluid and keep it clean as well.

An upgrade to the shifter will definitely help clean it up a bit. That being said, you still shouldn't expect it to feel short and smooth (relative to the shifters in Japanese cars). Just a different animal.

I always thought floppy tractor shifters were the best! :confused: Get a good short shifter on there, racing clutch, and row through the gears like a viking.

thanks guys! I was mostly hoping it wasnt just my trans. Ive got a centerforce dual friction clutch. im sure the biggest improvement will be the flywheel and shifter
