Default 2013 New Emissions Law

Ok so if everyone hasn't heard, starting Jan 1st 2013, 2000 and newer cars (in CA) will no longer require a tail pipe emission test. Before hearing of this, I was limited in my cam choices. But my question is, will a big cam screw up the O2 sensors and fail you? The testing will require the OBDII reading, but will the reading be "more strict" to what your O2s are gauging? Pretty curious if anyone has knowledge on this before I start buying the parts.

I'm running a 408 with a 255/263 .624/.624 115lsa and pass right through Maryland's emissions test......and I am running pretty much strait pipe with no o2 sensors at all, so it is ALL in the tune and adjusting the error reporting....if the problem doesn't get reported to your computer the computer can't report it to the odb2 plug

Werd. See here: https://ls1tech.com/forums/pcm-diagn...ness-test.html + P0440, P0442, P0443, P0446, P0449, and P1441, all EVAP (depending on what all you removed or keep failing)

Big difference between "not ready" and "no error, no report"

I know in Hptuners you go into the DTCs and there are 4 setting for eacherror code, no mil light, mil light on first occurance, mil light on second occurance, and no error, no report.

With the no error code setting it is just like the sensor is there working properly, nomatter what it is saying, or if it is even there.

^ Exactly - this is a life saver for having a built motor and passing emissions!

Winner, winner, chicken dinner

This is the case for any state that uses only the port to check for "compliance".

Mark, I'm going to have to take your word for it as it's been like 5 years since I played around with those things! That's just the thread and my notes I saved the last time I looked into it.

Guys,

I really do not think the state of CA is going to let us off so easy...

I believe (but I am not sure) that they will read the calibration ID's and CVN's and compare them to the original values, if they're different they would fail you;

if you have an advanced scantool (e.g. EFILive, HPTuners, AutoTap) you can read the calibration ID's and CVN's from your PCM;

go here and enter your VIN: http://tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web

[ CVN is like a checksum; when you edit your PCM either the CVN changes, or the PCM fails the checksum test ]

I'm not saying that this is exactly what they'll be doing; I'm saying they have the ability to easily do this.

CA/BAR/CARB is not going to let us off so easily, they are overly strict about controlling emissions.

So, kind of off topic.....but just what is the difference between the co2 that our cars emit, and the co2 that the trees breathe? Lol aren't we the true green ones?

It's the same CO2...

but the greenie-weenies call CO2 a greenhouse gas and claim that it contributes to global warming.

Wow so if they even hear a camshaft (not necessarily big lope) they will do a sniffer? Well this sucks big time! I'm not even looking for a "big" cam necessarily as it is my DD, probably under 224 but it's the overlap that kills you. Do you guys think this overlap calculator is accurate? http://www.wallaceracing.com/overlap-calc.php

The other reason for monitoring CO2, the one "they" don't like to mention...CO2 is a normal byproduct of combustion, as in your car should produce it, the only was to reduce CO2 emissions is to burn less fuel...just another way "they" are trying to mandate higher fleet fuel economy...

That's acurate. I passed a REF test with an aftermarket cam. Granted the overlap is only -6 degrees so there is not too much lope but you can tell it's not stock.

Did the referee say anything about it...? Did he otherwise seem like he knew what it was...? Did he look at the PCM (OBD2-wise)...?

He didn't say anything about it but at the time I did have the factory resonators, so it took a little of the edge off. I don't remember him plugging anything into the PCM.

I guess it may depend on the tester then. I might be going with a smog friendly cam after all Gman how do you like the 222 cam?

I like it alot as it drives stock like and still gives me a decent power boost. My Tuner, Ryne, said something like a 220ish/226 would have been a little better with the stock manifold and cats but I only paid $150 for the cam so I can't complain. The cam seems to have more usable power than the MS3 I had before.
