400 WHP goal...
I have a 283 headed LS1 I picked up That needs a rebuild. I purchased it as a complete long block for 1600 bucks and am on a strict rebuild budget. The heads, block and original rotating assembly were dropped off at the machine shop yesterday and am awaiting the news on what is good and what is bad. To me everything looked reusable. This motor is going in a drift car and needs to make 400rwhp... Any part suggestions would be appreciated as I have been away from the ls1 game for a little while and im sure new combos have come out in the past few years. Again, this is on a strict budget and needs to be as cheap as can be.

Its a 98, and original intake. I do all porting and assembly in house. I will be taking out quite a bit of material and its cheaper then buying something else. I worked at an LSx based shop for a long time and have seen 45hp gains form my port work consistently. The same increase was seen with my AFR clean up port. Really just seeing what new cam/rod/spring combos have come out since 07 lol.

whats the strict budget amount?
curious why you dropped the heads off before porting them. what shop do/did you work at?
i'd do port cleanup, mill for compression, MS3/springs/pushrods, and atleast a BBK or ls6 intake.
the LS1 intake is going to choke almost any cam combo you go with and make it ALOT harder to hit your goal. if you insist on keeping it go with a reverse split camshaft and spend money on the exhaust instead.
either way you'll basically need full bolt ons PLUS the right cam to hit 400whp.
A4 or M6 car, big difference.
really doubt you'll see more than 10rwhp by porting that ls1 intake.

I was based out of New Jersey. The power increase that I was seeing was on full bolt on cars. I know the intake is a major bottleneck, but if I am able to squeak out a number close to the 400 mark with out buying more then I have to it would be nice. I picked up the complete long block with harness, computer, and not a sensor missing for 1600 bucks. Still have a bunch to buy.

i'm going to assume this is a manual trans car since you are drifting. this makes it a good bit easier to get 400 to the wheels.
i wouldnt go with a torquer cam on a stock ls1 intake you need a REVERSE split. i would call cam motion or EPS to get a custom cam spec'd in your situation, i feel it would be the BEST money spent. your light chassis will be alot different than our heavy Fbodies.
still didnt mention a budget.
