No need to measure, you just cut between the two center ridges, start from the rear and go about halfway to the front.

the thing is that I want to make an actual trap door thought, with hinges and some kind of locking mecanism but clueless on how?

get a piano hinge from the hardware store and glue a magnet or use velco to keep it closed.

Buddy just came over and did mine for me and he cut 3 sides and peeled the panel back. During reassembly he drilled two holes just to the outside of the cut panel and we took 2 pieces of sheet metal and drilled holes in them. He then riveted the sheet metal to the body panel holes. The top riveted pieces will swivel over the panel to hold it down or swivel out of the way quickly to pull the panel up for access. We sealed it with silver foil tape to act as a vapor barrier. Quick and easy process that works very well.

My old car had a huge trap door cut in it by the previous owner...it was something like 16"x16"! Then they recovered it by putting a big sheet of 3/16 steel, not even aluminum, over the hole and used black gasket maker to seal it around the edges...it was way too big. Thats a nice sized hole there, still able to get things done and not monstrous like mine!

I actually JUST did mine.
Can post a pic tonight to give you an idea.
The picture above IS NOT the way you want to cut, that's for the metal tank.

I only had tin snips and a drill.
I drilled some pilot holes and cut along them.
I didn't want to risk nicking some wires.
Then I sealed with RTV and SS.
Came out really well.

Depending on the way you're going to seal it, you may not want to cut all the way out to the ridges.

I left about half an inch so my RTV would have a useable surface when I sealed it up.

I just used a hunk of stainless for the door and used some self tapping screws to hold it in place. I also put some thing rubber stripping on the stainless piece where it meets the car.

Thanks everyone and yes I need a 99-up for the plastic tank mine is an 02, im just wondering what exactly to put, im not too familiar with hardware so Im not sure what to ask for in lowes or home depot? some pictures of yours guys cars with the trap door would really really help and you would help a fellow ls1tech member
