New LS1 Owners - Newbie Tech - Ls6 Manifold install

Ok so i have a 1998 Trans am Ls1 a4 and i recently purchased a ls6 manifold used. I was reading on Ls1howto.com that i will need a front coolant pipe and rear coolant plugs for the install and every parts store that I called in my area doesn't have that exact part. Are those parts really necessary and where can i get them from? Also, is there anything I can do to the manifold while its off the car to make it run better.

You can retain your ls1 coolant crossover with the ls6 intake. You will need to file down the fins on the bottom and remove the knock sensor clips for it to work. There is a bunch of threads on how to do this just do a quick search. Good Luck!

you just chiesel or dremmel the fins off the bottom. Then it clears the lines. Theirs good install guides in the forum. You can clean and paint it.....Like this....http://pix.kg/p/611926556311%3A551871108/sct

Don't waste time trying to make an ls6 flow any better... They flow about as good as they will from GM.

If your not doing it tonight, then just order them from HawksThirdGen, (I believe its them I ordered mine from, or LMPerformance, WS6Store) Its the easiest to just buy them and install. I just did my LS6 intake this evening, took me and hour and 15 minutes from beginning to end with those coolant lines involved. Just leave the intake as it is, if you ever need more then just get a FAST, but it will be awhile before you need that. For entertainment purposes, look at the inside of the LS1 intake and the LS6, youll be amazed of the better design of the LS6.

Yes coolent crossover line and plugs heres the part number for both GM Part #12602544 front only crossover, and (2) #12602540
On the install becareful not to kink the brake booster vacum line in the rear. I did that on my FAST install and lost brake presure and could'nt figure out why. Talk about pain in the ass to get back there and fix the issue.

I would modify my coolant lines before paying for some. LOL

Don't break your sending unit... Or don't worry about it and replace it while the intake is off.

Good one Lemon! Yes dont break your oil sending unit, I broke mine durning my intake install and it cost like 60 bucks to replace. Plus 20 for the deep stocket. Make sure you inspect your sending unit before you put your intake on so you dont get false readings. The lines and plugs were only like 30bucks and it made my ls1 run a few degrees cooler and I live in Hawaii.

1) Use new gaskets

2) Get a new GM OPSU yours is near 15 yrs old and get the socket to install it,the socket is $8.00.

3) Get new knock sensors,see #2.

4) Get 8 old white socks a few rags and a couple cans of brake clean,you will see why when you get in there.

umm , i broke all the ribs out of mine to reuse the ls1 lines and never removed the knock sensor clips . Fit fine and ran fine .

I would not waste money on the coolant lines... there is absolutely no need for that. Knock the ribs off the bottom of the ls6 with a chizel and hammer... they snap off so easily you will be shocked. And yeah def get new KS and harness while that intake is off!

I did mine over the weekend, took a Dremel to the fins. If you don't want to knock all the fins off there are some pics floating around on here showing which ones to remove. I think I did a search for "what to grind off of a LS6 intake" or something to that effect. I did not remove the clips from the knock sensors and so far I have not seen an issue. I totally agree with #4 from the above post...I was shocked when I took the LS1 intake off. I also put a catch can on, they are debatable until you are blue in the face but after seeing all the oil inside the old intake I will try anything to help reduce the amount of oil getting sucked in.

I just chisled off the bottom fins, WWAAAYYY easier! Here's how I did it...
