I say either has it's benefits but you will def need a torque converter for either cam and a tune.

You need a converter with either even if its a small one. A 2800 would drive almost like stock and make either cam very easy to live with.

Depending on a budget you could go with an 11 inch model from Yank, Circle D, or FTI, they range about $400 stall speed 2800-3200 and will get the job done. If you want to step it up a little you could go to a 9.5 billet model for around $700 and stall it from 3200-4400. Personally I'd go with something like an SS3600 from Yank and the 228 cam.

I'd feel completely comfortable running the 224 on a stock converter car. I ran a 226/226 112lsa camshaft and it drove completely fine. It's not optimal, but neither is a stock cam with a stock converter. When the tuner tunes it he just has to keep the idle speed low to prevent the car from pushing through the brakes.

224 on a 114 MIGHT be fine, but will be slower than stock and probably not even sound cammed.

It is a -4 degree overlap so very little lope but noticeable to trained ears, especially with headers.

Properly tuned it will NOT be slower than stock. While it may not be optimized, it will work Ok.

Your advice card has been revoked. We do try to give CORRECT information here if at all possible.

because EVERY car will sound exactly the same right?

dont mistake my post count for my knowledge here. i didnt see any description of the car, exhaust setup or anything else by the OP, hence why i said COULD work with stock converter but might sound stock.

either way your car sounds damn good for a tr224 on a 114° and they dont all idle that well at stock rpm and sound like that, even with idle bumped it is noticeable to someone like me that has YEARS of LSx specific tuning experience but not to everyone.

i just didnt want him thinking that was anything other than a baby cam at best, and i wouldnt recommend any cam swap without a converter.

No a 224r 114 won't sound like an MS3/4 or Trex but it will have cam lope. Autos obviously lope harder because of generally lower idle speeds BUT I've heard them in M6s and you can still tell they are there. Turn-downs obviously help the case

My 98 z28 a4 stock converter 3.23 car 60'd slightly better after a 226/226 .585/.585 112lsa camshaft install and tune.

The answer from someone who has actually had this on their own car (ME MYSELF) says:

It WILL be fine, but WILL be faster than stock and WILL sound cammed.

kthx.

cant argue with that, if it was the only change made, i mean the tune obviously probably helped but i'm sure the cam had something to do with it too. i've just never seen these results with a stock converter car around here.

PS, i'm in no way arguing but i've seen some 224 cammed cars IN PERSON that sound very close to stock with magnaflows or other quiet exhaust, guess not every car is the same though.

OP, hope your dad has the same results as everyone else and i'm wrong but as long as he is prepared to put a converter in it if need be there is nothing to worry about.

Quick Reply: question for 224r or 228r cam
