What was the first year for the honeycomb style tailights?

98-02, came on the v6 and v8 bird.

I have a 98 trans am that I bought off the first owner and it has the grid design?

They easily swap out. Car may have been wrecked and the bodyshop didnt know any better or the original owner swapped them...

check ebay or the for sale section, probably run you around 200-300 for a set.

Also craigslist or you may luck out at a salvage yard.
