Cadillac CTS-V - Ported Throttle Bodies are Awesome!

So, there's a guy back in Illinois (near where I used to live) who's an expert in rebuilding all kinds of throttle bodies and who offers port & polish services in addition to powdercoating. He's pretty freaking good (example):

I just got my custom black powdercoated LS2 throttle body in tonight and installed it. Keeping in mind that my existing throttle body only has 22,000 miles on it and I keep it squeaky clean, the fact that this throttle body made a significant difference in the way my car feels is impressive. I have a 20.4 lb F1 Racing flywheel in the car right now (soon to be a 13 lb Fidanza), and always had surging issues when starting from a stop--until now. Throttle response on this CTS-V has always felt a little slow--now it's tight and snappy. Totally worth the money. New vs. old:

Although I'm sure the old salts are chuckling at me, for those of you who are less experienced than I: as long as you find a reputable dealer (like Affordable_Speed (http://www.ebay.com/sch/affordable_speed/m.html?hash=item1c1cbd7e00&item=120741264896&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&_trksid=p4340.l2562)--highly recommended), a polished and ported throttle body is a cheap (~$100) and easy (< 10 minute installation) way to tighten up your car in a way that I thought couldn't be done.
I can't effing wait to drive to work tomorrow!

That looks good, and that's a real good price too.

For the money its a good mod if its ported correctly. Its definetly not a big power adder but throttle response is much improved and you might squeak 3-4rwhp out of it.

Lol $100 is too much for her to do mine. I'm talkin bout spending $10 for the toothless hooker at the truck stop before I blow my mod money like that... Lol

I'd have to call him and ask. I know it's 90mm+, but I don't know if he goes all the way up to 92mm. That said, the stock TB is not 90mm all the way through, so it's an improvement, regardless.

One of these days, I'm going to get a Canon T3i or GoPro Hero HD 2. Then I'll be able to offer more in terms of quantitative evidence, but in reality, the benefit of this particular modification is really hard to demonstrate unless you have a robot at the wheel and a fast data-logger.

Exactly. Driveability / fun factor goes up, which in my opinion, is at least as important as more power.

Any issues with doing a port like this after a tune which I assume you did? I would be in the same boat but don't want to get another tune or mess mine up by doing this mod. Let us know how things are after putting some miles on it. I thought about this mod but my local tuner said most ported tb's do more harm than good.

As I've heard the same. It seems to be hit or miss with ported TB but his ebay feedback was stellar. (Only a few complaints which seemed communication based which I somewhat expect from a guy porting TB). IE he is in the garage porting and not answering emails...

Based on the research I did beforehand, it appears that most of the problems with ported throttle bodies come from people thinning out the blade too far. This guy polishes it, but doesn't grind it down.
Jannetty Racing (my tuner) modified my throttle response in first and second gear, allowing the engine RPM to float a bit at very low speeds to help me control my 20 lb F1 Racing flywheel. With the stock TB, you'd never know he did it. This new throttle body is much, much quicker on its feet, and now, if I tap the gas and immediately let off, the throttle stays up at ~1200 RPM for about two seconds (as programmed). Last night I emailed Ted @ Jannetty and he said that it's his programming, not the TB. When I have my car in to retune for the cam, he'll correct it.
Maybe I'll try to do a shaky cam video later. I really need a better camera and a solid mount. 30 miles of assorted driving so far and no problems whatsoever.

So im assuming the same drivability/performance wood be expected for an ls6? Or is this ls2 only?

I'd expect the same kind of change in throttle response. Based on a quick Google search, I believe that particular throttle body is 75mm with a lip that cuts it down to 71.5mm at its narrowest. If it wasn't so darned expensive, I'd recommend a larger intake manifold and TB. Honestly, it's probably a lot more cost effective to jam more air down that smaller pipe with a supercharger.

I've heard terrible things about their throttle bodies and people not getting their core deposits back. STAY AWAY.

Follow the link I provided in the original post. Affordable Speed on eBay is one of the good guys.

I had a Jantzer and it was nice. However I had the one on my V done locally by a friend that has done hundreds. $50 :)
