Default Verdict on LSX iron block.......are they good or what?

I searched....got nothing.

I'm wanting to start my build soon. I was going to use a 6.0 iron with studs + LS9 gaskets. But its going to make 1,200 RWHP. So I don't want to risk lifting the heads and having to start over.

Some people tell me the LSX iron block is junk, some say its fine, some say its a crap shoot from block-to-block.

Can someone tell me....what's the deal? Is there certain machining that needs to be done to make them good, like fixes, tricks, etc...?????

I want to use one if they are 100% rock solid and have no manufacturing defects or issues.

Oh.....402ci + GT55, thats the build.

Thanks.

Im no expert and can only go off what ive read and seen from the members here,

and what ive seen, its a crap shoot, lol.

we've read people's stories of core shift, and shitty cylinder walls, to people having fantastic results.

If something has changed and QC has greatly increased, id consider one on my upcoming engine build myself. So im in for info as well

AS long as you don't go with a lsx 454 standard deck your fine. It's the standard deck 454 that makes the cylinder walls to thin mixed with core shift you risk putting a hole in the cylinder with big boost. Either go tall deck or std deck 427 and you won't regret it.

well, with my ongoing personal build, i went with smaller cubes (390) to have thicker cylinder walls, and the motor has already pushed over 1100-1200rwhp and taken it. Iron aes 390. lq9 block. no build is bullet proof but I am going to get as close as I can.

4 x 4 = 402ci

I could go 25-28psi without issue then???

Yeah you would be fine with that. That would be a real good boost motor.

Ok. So I assume my builder and his machine shop will find any issues when prepping the block, right?
If they deem that its perfect, then its perfect, right?

Or do people only find the issues with these blocks only after their engine comes apart?

If you want to be 100% sure sonic test the block. It's like an extra 3-400 I think but worth it if your trying to go all out.

Back from the dead.....

So where's the best place to get these LSX iron blocks now?

I think I'll sonic test it and maybe have RED sleeve it. Expensive, but total piece of mind. Plus 6 bolts per cylinder.......
I think Id rather go 6 bolts per cylinder because I really want to go 20psi and don't want to worry about gaskets or lifting heads........

I'll sell my new AES fully forged iron 390ci.......it only has about 1000 miles on it.

If you are going to do all that why wouldn't you just get a dart iron block?

Yep.
The machine shop guy liked what he saw when the Dart block got dropped off and he started inspecting it. The only glitch so far has been the extra time waiting for the head studs. Everything has been going smoothly since.

That is what I have and I love it. The engine is a tq monster with the 4" arm. My tq was no more than 50 less than the hp at all boost levels.

I went with the Dart LS Iron block over the LSX. After all my research alot of builders prefer the style and features of that block.
