If I just want to take off 1 coat of rattle clear, what grit should be good?

Well, I'm trying to paint my lower airbox. I sanded it down for the most part but didn't get all of the texture in some spots. Sprayed a gloss black and came out fine, you couldn't see/feel the spots that still had slight texture. When I went to spray some clearcoat, it cracked in the spots that the texture was still there. If the top coat looked good though, I don't understand why/how the clear would go on bad if the top coat didn't.

40 grit on a d/a J/K I would try 1500 wet and see if that would work.
