Racer's Lounge - does anyone actually know anyone who died from anesthetic?

i am getting my wisdom teeth out, and they're giving me local anesthetic on top of sedation/regional (i think) anesthetic. I've had it anesthetic twice before, and lived... but I always get antsy before I get put under and am afraid I'm gonna croak.

You're good to go. Don't be scared, its just meant to relax you, not kill you.

It's doing the exact opposite right now :(

Having your wisdom teeth removed is a very safe, controlled environment. It's not like you're a gunshot wound victim in a trauma center. Nerves are part of the deal, and everyone reacts differently, but you'll be fine. I am a huge wuss when it comes to pain and needles, and my wisdom tooth removal was a total non-event. My wife went to the same surgeon and did great, but she was really crying when she came out of the anesthesia, not due to pain, but because it has that affect on some people.

You'll be fine.

I be more worried about it not relax you enough and you feel everything. Did this help? But either way you have to go thru it. I got nauses after I woke up but thats about it.

My gums got infected twice in the month following my wisdom teeth removal. Did everything I was told to do to no avail. It really sucked

but that's only because it wasn't administered properly.

I've been put under a few times. They always have trouble waking me back up. I usually keep dosing back off, but always wake up super rested . Wisdom teeth are cake. The worst thing about it is tasting blood for a day or two.

The worst thing i have ever had happen with anesthesia..... EVERY time i wake up from it I am totally and utter confused and try to collect my thing and leave the hospital. It's the damnedest thing. The last 2 time i had had to have my brother/mother present for me waking up, because i freaked out the two times before. For the record i have been put out 6+ times for various procedures due to a genetic cancer issue.

The oddest one was the very first one, I woke up, panicked, got my stuff from under the bed, got dressed and was strolling out when they caught me. After that fiasco, i literally had the giggles to the point of feeling like i had been gassed by the Joker for over 3hrs. It was insane, I could not stop laughing, almost like i was going insane.

The first time I had it, I think they used too much and it made me sick, had a horrible fever for like a few days. The next time, I told them that and didn't have any issue, so maybe they used a lower dose.

I would just get local instead of general. Safer IMO

Local? Shoot man they had to put me completely OUT because my wisdom teeth were so impacted, so be thankful that isn't your case. If anything, I'd be worried that the local isn't enough to assuage all of the pain. I remember the dentist telling me "you don't want to be awake to see what we're going to have to do to you..." After the procedure, I was on pain 'meds for about 3 weeks. I remember the pain would get so bad that I couldn't see straight...

When I got mine pulled I didn't use it they just novicaned me up and did the procedure. In the past when I woke up from being under I was only a kid but I was told I punched a nurse and was yelling like a psychopath and I don't remember. Don't want something like that to happen again.

You don't want just a local getting wisdom teeth out. Especially if they end up having to cut them out. Ask them for some nitrous before hand, that'll make you not care at all.

My hernia surgery I woke up while the nurse was shaving my balls, I told her hey, your not my wife she freaked and told them to give me more. I woke up riding in a "racecar" down the hallways to my recovery room. Then after 2 hours of iv fluid and pills I stopped getting sick from it, but nope never heard of anyone Dieing.

I had what you're having with my wisdom teeth... you're not getting a general (like what they use for surgery); they're just giving you a mild sedative (Xanax mixed with some other drugs) to make you relax to the point of not caring about anything, and you'll most likely just fall asleep; not be "under" like a general does.

I've had 4 surgeries, not counting wisdom teeth, with general's; all went good with no major complications.

Always awoke with the WORST case of cottonmouth I've ever experienced, and normally just feeling tired with a "heavy" body. And thirsty as HELL.

The only time I even had a minor issue was the last surgery (ACL reconstruction, Petallar graft); my BP wouldn't stabilize as high as they needed it to for me to leave, so I was in post-op for ~3.5 hours instead of the typical hour or 2. Got a bunch of fluids pumped into me, ate something, and I was good.

Wisdom teeth sound like a nightmare, what happens if you just leave them in?

Luckily I've been without those teeth since birth, somehow lucked out.

If you're lucky - nothing

If you're unlucky it ranges from pushing the rest of your teeth out of alignment, to rotting in your mouth, causing abscesses and infection requiring them to be either Root-Canaled or pulled anyways.

I've heard of one local guy dying from it. It was from a completely idiotic anesthesiologist. She had NO business doing what she was doing and no one understood how she graduated college.

I have to get this done too really soon. I'm not that worried about it. The only thing that I am worried about is that I talk in my sleep a lot. Last time I was put under for something else all I remember is getting up too early and trying to walk and just falling on my face. Also my dad who was there with me at the time said before I went completely out that I was talking about just random stuff before I finally went to "sleep". :emb: I just hope that I don't say anything too embarrassing.

Oh yeah, when i had 3 of my wisdom teeth removed they used a local. I was awake for all the cutting and cracking and sucking sounds, all while the dentist insisted on talking to me :bang: as if i were able to talk back.

It wasn't too bad, I ended up driving my SS to Willow Springs and ran the track a few times

My girlfriend has the same issue. If you notify them that the anesthesia makes you sick, they are able to add something to the line to help with nausea.

From what I know it wasn't her first but definitely her last! My mom told me the story a while back. I can't remember all the details. I'm gonna see if I can dig up the story online.

Of course, using too little can be an issue also.

One of the surgeries my mom had for cancer went horribly wrong for her. She said that they didn't use enough to totally put her out but it was enough that she couldn't move or speak. But she was still awake for like the whole surgery, and she said she could hear the doctor asking for different tools and could feel the pain of being cut open.

I told her to sue for malpractice/suffering but she was too weak/near the end of her life and didn't want to deal with legal battles.

Same thing happened to me on an eye surgery when I was 15. I remember everything from that surgery, including the scalpel coming down into my eye muscle, and my eye covering with blood... It comes back to me in dreams/nightmares to this day.

Also, my condolences on the loss of your mother.

they need to figure out a way to prevent this from happening. you would think your heart rate would skyrocket from the pain and they would realize something isn't right.

Glad 2 hear it radeon¡ generally speaking the shorter your under the better your chances. Also for future reference more people get sick after from gettin knocked out on laughing gas over sodium penothol so if they give you a choice between the mask or an IV always get the IV.....plus sodium penothol(truth serum) is much nicer feeling;). I`ve had 12 operations if you count wisdom teeth, only 2 I was sick after was where i opted for the laughing gas.. And got another 2 surguries scheduled for this fall, more nerved up about the rehab then goin under.
My best friends dad did die from anesthesia after HS graduation 8yrs ago tho. The crazy part was that it was just a minor op he went under from and this guy had a heart transplant when he was 20.. No 1 expected it at all

Ive been under anesthetic 6 times and I woke up every time. I dont know how long it takes to have your wisdom teeth out, but I was out for a while.
12.5 hours, 4 hours, 4.5 hours, 6 hours, 4 hours, 2.5 hours in that order. I was nauseous after the third and last one.

Ask for nitrous before they put you under, especially if you have bad viens. Mine are deep and apparently collapse easily. For the last one, it took about 40 tries to hit a vein (I HATE needles, so I stayed awake for the next surgery) with the N2O I didnt even care. It will also make you run faster:jest:

Had this done in March of last year! When they asked for my body weight, I wrote 240 instead of my true 235, I know, I know, I shouldn't lie and yadda yadda yadda but I wanted to make sure I was out

Maybe a bit late, but I visited my Mum last weekend at a health resort, and she told me there was a Bodybuilder there (mind you, it's targeted at old people), that had a "simple" ear operation and the doc f*cked up. He went into coma for 4 weeks, lost quite a bit of weight etc. After his wakeup, he got into this health resort and at first, he moved and talked like he was completely stoned out of his mind. A bear of a man, barely able to walk at a normal pace.
Bad luck for him and I hope he has a good lawyer, but these things can happen.
