Hey everybody well I just recently got this new to me 98 formula, the only thing is that it has some body damage, here is the best pic i can get

http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m608/99FreshenedCherokee/2012-03-31124634.jpg

Its pretty bad it extends all the way from the front to the rear dent. Anyways I went to a local bodyshop and they quoted me $600 to fix the dent, fix the door(its broken and its falling off), and repaint everything to make it look like it never happened. Do you all think $600 is a good price? or should it be less? I can try to post pics tomorrow of the full hit but it doesnt look like a $600 job, maybe a $400 but idk how much they usually charge. What do you all think, from what you all can see in the pic?

It should cost more than $600 to properly fix this.

Why do you say that? Are you talking from experience or from what you think?

600 sounds cheap.

So would you take it as a good price? Friends have had their cars done with them before and they came out looking great.

For that to be fixed properly the quarter panel would need to be replaced and a replacement door would need to be found. I would be expecting $1600+. For $600 they must be using A-LOT of body filler.

We have no pics of the door, just a brief comment that the door is damaged.
We don't even really have a good pic of the damage on the quarter.

And you're saying, with the limited info we have, that all that stuff needs replaced?

I'd think we'd need more detailed info/pics before making such conclusions.

The door could easily have some simple damage that is easy to repair (it is fiberglass after all) and I've seen some pretty impressive metal repair work.

OP, can you get us better pics of the damages? If you've seen their work and it is good work, then it sounds like a good deal. Any idea what exactly they'd be doing to fix it?

actually he told me he was going to have to cut and weld in some new metal.. plus the door is fiberglass, its fixable. no filler being used here.

Sparky.. He clearly posted that the door is falling off. That usually warrants a replacement.

hey everybody, well first pics of the door

The outer panel is seperating from the top on both sides. Next are the pics of the damage the car came with.

Anyways, I already sent the car to the shop, I'l post pics after I get the car back.

Oh the outer skin is just separating. That's (unfortunately) a relatively common thing on these cars as they get older. Any halfway decent shop can fix that. I think it is partly due to how the windows bottom out and push the inner and outer panels apart. I always put my window down, then bump it up just a smidge so the doors aren't bowed any but the window is still fully down.

The front fender is an easy enough repair.

The quarter will take the most work. I've seen worse get fixed, and I've also seen less get replaced. Depends on the shop and the person doing the work. I know a body guy who has no problem fixing metal, I've seen his work (some of it being custom metal work) and he is really good.

Post up the after pics when you get it back!

That quarter could be repaired by a competent body man. No need for replacing it.

I just had a dent somewhat like what you have on my quarter but it wasnt as deep and I paid $600 to get the metal worked out and the 1/4 repainted but that was it, no damage anywhere else but there. http://ls1tech.com/forums/paint-body-work/1524711-some-jackass-hit-me.html

I'll chime in and say 600 is cheap. No need to replace the qtr. A good bodyman can repair that and still not use a ton of filler. door can be repaired. painting a whole side alone usually costs more than 600. If they have a legitimate reputation and warranty their work i'd say go for it. Just go around and get a few other quotes and see what they would charge. thats a good guideline.

I can. Body work takes some time, I'd prefer them to take a little longer and be sure it is done right ;)

Yea thats true. Well it looks like Im waiting another day, I got no call from the body shop, although i did pass by..lol...looks like they'r making some progress, they had my door on some sort of stand. My guess is they were doin some fiberglass work on it. Well we'll see tommorrow what happens.

Be patient. You don't want to rush body work and from what you say they're charging you for that amount of damage, I'd be happy if it took two weeks. Good luck with it.

hey everybody, well I got my car back Yesterday! The only thing was that the paint looked a little off!!!..So I took her back to the body shop and they said for me to bring her back on Monday for a re-paint.I was a little pissed, but he said it was the people who gave him the paint that messed up, he just put it on. Anyways he said it would only take a day to sand off the old paint and put on the new paint. What do you all think??

You can't really see anything in that pic. Whats the bottle of Toulene for? Atleast I think thats what it is.

How does the door/quarter gap look? Did they put a new door on it?

I think that for what you paid, you made out like a bandit, especially if they are going to repaint at their cost. I just picked up a 2000 SS that a certain friend of mine is going to repaint in red, color sand, polish and restripe for 2000.00. I'm estatic. It's going to look great sitting next to the Firehawk.

Agreed. You either got it done by someone who loves to work on these cars OR you got it worked on by some cranker who needs some quick money. I hope its the former rather than the latter.

well actually its thinner. and I was using it for cleaning my windows, it looks like they had accidentally misplaced the tape and had what i believe was a little clear coat, also it came with an assload of orangepeel, but I have since wetsanded, and brought it down a bit. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics, il try to get some better pics later.

and thanks everyone, Im glad it came out great, btw the paint on the rest of the car looks like crap, I might just end up getting a new paint job. I have this huge scratch on my drivers side that my bros ex gf made when it was his, its as long as the crash that the passangers side had.it extends from the front fender all the way to the rear quarter.plus, it was washed with dish soap and dried with a towels for most of its life, getting the paint to an "alright" finish has been a huge pita!it has unbelievable swirl marks.

I can certainly tell you when it comes to blending half the car will need to be painted and depending on the situation maybe more. 600$ is hella cheap. I bet they will try to pull it/push it out and fill the rest out. Re glue the door, primer paint, maybe a clear and buff out the fender.

If you are happy with it than that all that really matters in the end. For 600 bucks I am impressed it is even painted.
