Default Oil Consumption after new build !!1

So I just got done rebuilding my motor, new piston and rings, all new bearings, new cam, heads were redone by AI, new valve seals. I have the ls6 valley cover with the pcv. The inside of the intake is covered in oil. I just hooked my rev extreme catch can back up to resolve the oil going into the catch can.

So my pcv has the drivers side capped off, passenger side back is capped, front runs to TB. Now the valley goes to the catch can, then out of the catch can pcv, it goes to the intake.

Any ideas? Would just going to the breather help?

I put about 1000 miles on it, it was down about 1.5 quarts.

Your PCV system is f'd up and won't work properly without passive vents at the valve covers. Put it back to stock configuration and re-test.

What end-gap did you set for your 1 and 2 compression rings, and what bore prep did you do?

I set my pcv up exactly like the ls6, it should be fine. I drove 1500 miles, put about 1000 miles on it this past weekend and thats I noticed it was down on oil. So 1000 miles, it was down a quart and a half.

It also is blowing black soot from the exhaust, my tune isnt exactly correct right now, need to go back to get it finished.

As far as ring gap, my engine builder did it so I am not sure.

Engine builder said use 10w30 regular oil for 200 miles, then drain it and put synthetic. He said just dont keep rpms the same. I have about 1800 miles on it now, changed the oil 3 times total so far. It has mobil 1 synthetic in it now, 5w30. I just put my catch can back on yesterday so not sure if the problem is solved. I doubt a catch can will solve the oil problem, but who knows.

I am pretty sure the black smoke is my tune, I had it tuned but some plugged injectors, which I didnt know at the time, caused some breaking up and backfiring. I have them cleaned now and it runs great.

Wow....what terrible break-in advice...jeezuz. You should have changed your oil at 50, 100, 200, 300 and 500 miles....at least. The crazy amount of metal shavings a new engine sheds just circulates through the engine and hammers the bearings. But too late for that now.

Anyway. The LS6 valley cover is horrible, when you are pulling crankcase gases from that port you pull WAY too much oil mist right out of the crankcase. I was losing 1 qrt every 500-750 miles when pulling from the valley cover port. As soon as I went with the set-up you'll see in the link below...oil consumption stopped totally. And I didn't have a ton of raw wet oil throughout the intake.

Factory PCV systems are a joke too. There's no reason oil should be going into an intake thats designed for air. I've tried MANY different set-ups and this one works flawlessly. Zero oil in my intake, not even a trace amount. No catch can. I can stick one of those long Q-tips into my intake and rub it all over and it will come back just as clean as when I took it out of the package. And I have plenty of suction being pulled from my crankcase via the passenger side valve cover by my intake vacuum port. Fresh air enters my drivers side valve cover and valley cover port via a small filter I built and that air is pulled across the entire engine and out the passengers side valve cover.

Consider doing this:

Is the car so rich that the rings were never able to seat? If the cylinders are washed with fuel that would prevent proper break in.

It might have been, not quite sure. I drove it 300 miles, brought it to the dyno, put the injectors in, that when the problem started, it was running lean, so the computer told it to start dumping fuel. When I left, it cleared up and the airfuel was fine.

I am sending my injectors to New Era to have them flowed and cleaned if needed, that was I can rule out that there is stuff in the injectors. It runs really good right now, just want to be sure the injectors are clean.
