Default what oil weight ?

I have a 5.3 with a big comp cam ls6 intake ported oil pimp, and I have the famous sewing machine noise....what's the best oil weight that I should use? Not only to quiet the sound a little bit but what's going to keep my engine alive the longest ...I live mesa Arizona and it gets up to 115° here

I used to run 5w30 sythetic but after my cam swap, my tuner suggested 10w30 for the added protection because of the extra power.. so i run 10w30 now..

5w30 and 10w30 will behave until the the temp gets below freezing. At 0C 5w30 behaves as a 5 weight. at 100C 5w30 behaves as a 30 weight. For a 10w30 same thing. 10 at 0 degrees C, 30 at 100 degrees C.

All 30's are not the same. There is an acceptable viscosity range for 30W at 100 degrees C. Mobil-1 is near the bottom of the range and nearly a 20W oil whereas German Castrol is near the top of the range and nearly a 40W oil. If you really want to look into this, go to the manufacturer's web sites and pull the tech sheets and look at the viscosity at 100 C and use that to help with oil selection.

What pushrod length did you measure, and how much preload are you running on your lifters?
