I'm getting ready to start a major weight reduction with my car for the upcoming season since the motor is getting freshened up. currently car is 3400 lbs with me in it. i've done stuff to lighten it but with the addition of the 8.50 certed cage, nitrous shit and everything else i still think she's portly so something has gotta give. In an effort to get down to class minimums in a class I want to run I need to lose about 300 lbs..... So i'm done fukkin around.
How much weight would be lost if:
1. I get rid of all factory glass and replace it with speedglass to include the windshield.
2. Replace the stock steel hatch with VFN fiberglass hatch
3. Replace both doors with VFN glass doors...
I'm thinking that has GOTTA be at least a 250lb reduction no????
Also the main point of this thread is does anybody have pics of what the VFN doors look like on a 4th gen? On VFN's site they look a little strange like the actual window portion is smaller. Is that for the mounting points for the lexan???? thanks in advance guys...

The stock hatch is the smc fiberglass material. I believe replacing the rear glass with the percy speed glass is god for 30lbs or so. The vfn hatch also usually needs a lot of work to fit and look nice.

Doors and hatch both take a good bit of work to get them to fit, but you will save a good bit of weight. Doors with lexan side windows will be less then 1/2 of a stock food, so figure about 60 lbs there, speed glass front and rear will be another 50. Hood would be another 20 lbs as well if you haven't done that yet. Not sure what you have already done, a list of whats done would help, 3400 is pretty heavy with driver

Yeah I can get you a quick list of what's done....
BMR k-mbr and a-arms
aerospace front brakes
VFN sunoco pin on hood
removed windshield wipers/motor
no front bumper support
no rear bumper support
race seats
gutted under the dash (HVAC and AC removed)
manual rack
bogarts
lightweight carpet
Sheetmetal door panels
Nasty sheetmetal fuel tank
cut and removed trunk (to clear wheelie bars trunk was raised like 6")
I'm thinking that is most of it so far. Stuff that adds weight is the Moser 9", the TH400, the BMR drag bar, the wheelie bars, mild steel 10pt cage. The motor has a low mount alternator...
So lemme get this straight. the cars on here that are down below 3000# still have the STOCK DOORS?!"?!?!?!?! I've seen a few pics of cars taht are cut up to remove weight but holy crap. I can't believe any f-body can be that light without replacing alot of steel with fiberglass replacement stuff.... I swore the hatch and rear glass would have been first. VFN does have a bolt on replacement for the hatch that is a bit heavier at 25# but i've been told teh stock steel hatch is 100+ with glass...

I had my Trans Am down to 3180 with me in it with stock glass and body panels with the exception of replacing the t-tops with a hard top roof. This was with 2 non power factory Firebird seats, door bars still in place, factory carpet/no insulation, Wolfe steel 6 point, and me weighing 210lbs. At this weight I had not cut any brackets/etc from the car(other than the roof), I simply unbolted everything I could do without. Though I kept the headlights, signals, and horn functional.
Drivetrain is a 347 LS6 block, turbo 350, Strange 12 bolt/spool, FAST intake.
Stock fuel tank/EVAP still in place.
ABS deleted with Strange brakes on Racecraft spindles using a Racecraft master cylinder.
UMI k-member(stock control arms) and tunnel mount torque arm in mild steel.
Madman control arms and panhard bar in the rear.
BMR extreme anti roll bar and tranny mount.
Weld Pro Stars 3.5 front/10" rear.
I don't know what the car weighs currently but I have taken a bunch out over the above setup. Lexan F&R, minitub, cut cowl, etc.

Front spindle mount wheels and the lw spindles would take a ton of weight off, any of the aftermarket spindles, even if you don't do a drop spindle, or spindle mount wheels (something that gets rid of the cast iron piece) will help alot, those are really heavy.
Fwiw I'm aiming for 2900 with a bbc, and a 25.3 cert chassis, with stock doors and a formula hatch. I don't know if it will quite get there, but I do know that I have alot left that can be done to get it there for sure (pin on hatch if I want to take that route, fiberglass top to replace the t tops, carbon doors that are available)
If I can spring for the alum. block when the motor gets built, it will be very close as it is I'm sure.. with a few thousland dollars more, I think LOW 2800's would be possible.
With an alum ls motor, car could probably be 27xx

Percy rear glass saves 27
VFN pin on hood (sunoco 15pounds) saves 45-50 after you remove the stock hood stuff (keeping the wipers too)
I hear you can get 2700, and never taken your door panels off :)
Also heard about getting under 3K raceweight, with stock brakes, spindles, upper arms, PS.

Here is what I did with my doors this winter. Saved 17LBS per door. I would do this before puting on aftermarket doors.
my vfn doors with lexan and hinges weigh 23lbs each
