Are there any benefits to be had? I'm wanting to put a motor together for this summer and then build a more radical one over this year to be put in during winter downtime.

The ZO6 cam is bigger, and will give you small gains over the LS1. I believe in one of the stickeys, the specs are posted for both cams.

If you're going to do a cam swap you can still go with a mild cam that won't make it much louder and get a lot more gains than by going with the Z06 cam, I wouldn't recommend it.

What cam would work well with stock converter? I have an a4 car and don't want to get into changing everything right now.

I totally agree with you...
Z06 cam is not the best choice here..

I would NEVER cam an ls1 with a stock converter....do yourself a favor and do a stall first.
If your going to build a motor later this year and want a gain right now, just do a converter, and not a z06 cam....this will give you more gains than a z06 cam swap.
Look at a yank 3,600-4,000.

I would ultimately like to find a m6 car instead, but I picked this one up at a good price so I figured I could do a little work to it and then sell/trade it in the future. I'll look into a converter for sure

They first mod I did to my 02 Hawk was a yank SS3600. The car is not tuned yet and let me tell you it still drives like stock it just needs some more RPM to get going, and it hits hard, it will roast the tires if you floor it, its super fun. Out of all the mods on my M6 98 it took H/C/I to make it as fun as this 02 A4 with a converter. Listen to the advice above and throw a converter on it.
