EDIT: FINISHED PRODUCT BEFORE WET SANDING AND BUFFING

I was in an accident and couldn't find a regular bumper so I went with a Trans Am Bumper.

It has a lot of spider webbing on it. I sanded it down and you can still see the marks. Will they show up when I get it painted?

A paint job is really expensive, do you think it will look half decent if I used a spray can (color matched of course)? I painted my headlight lid that I got from a junk yard and it looked really good but when I applied three layers of clear coat, it lost all of it's color and metallic to it and looks cloudy...

keep sanding... if you get all the way down to the plastic and it is still there chances are it will come back, it may go away though if its just in the primer. Also get it painted dont rattle can it and use a flex agent to help the crack issue. i am not a painter by trade but my father in law is a body man and i have painted a couple cars and some parts with his guidance.

ps i feel your pain i just did all this to my nose i hate hate hate the endless sanding

I understand your situation. You might gives this a try as it is actual 2 part clear coat.
Spray Max 2k High Gloss Clearcoat Aerosol

Around $25/can and has a 24hr pot life, but it is automotive grade. I wouldn't use any other clear out of a can simply due to the amount of abuse the front end of a car takes. Realize too that you won't have an "flex agent" in the cans of clear. You will have to check and make sure the base paint you used is compatible with the clear.

What is 'flex agent'? I have an air compressor with a small spray gun hook up, it's not the greatest though.

Also when the bumper is wet (like when it just rained). You can't see the webbing.

Here's the spray paint I used to paint my headlight lid and the outer edges of the bumper (http://www.automotivetouchup.com/spray_paint_matched.aspx)

That paint should be fine with the clear i posted, but you may contact them and see.

Okay, thanks.

How about the sanding though? I'll go take a few close up pictures. I don't think I can sand it any further without ruining it?

again i am not a pro but my best explanation of a flex agent is a clear additive added to both the primer and clear coats that helps keep flexable flimsy parts like bumper covers from cracking from movement. you dont use much i was told 10% per sprayable quart from the local paint supply store its kinda high at $55 a pint

When I spray painted the edges of the bumper (so I don't have to take it off when I got around to finishing it) I applied some of this stuff to it, Dupont Plas-Stick.

Subscribing. Got the spider webbing on my front and rear. I was wondering if it were just a problem in the paint or if it was actually fissures in the plastic. Let us know how it turns out.

I have this on my rear bumper as well.

There was a nice detailed post here below my last post but it's gone now :/

I'm probably going to paint it towards the end of May...

I went to town on it today, sanded the bumper and the hood. I can't get the marks around the Firebird logo because I don't want to mess up the groove. Everything else looks OK though, barley visible.

btw the firebird logo on the front bumper is just a sticker. I wouldn't paint over it.

It's not a sticker?

Its an emblem?

Its just stuck on to the bumper with some of that really strong 2 sided tape stuff. A heat gun and a plastic putty knife should take it right off. Its about 40 bucks for a new one but to do a good looking paint job thats what it takes. Good luck with the project, I have some spider webbing on my back bumper thats going to have to be addressed soon.

Well, if I go through the hassle of taking it off, I might as well replace it because the very tips of the wings broke off. Is this a genuine one and is it for a Trans Am?

It looks the part and it says its NOS (new old stock) so that should do the trick. Personally I like the look of the bird shaved.:pimp:

Got any pictures of one shaved off?

I can paint it with it off, buy that emblem and then if I don't like it off, I can just slap the sticker on?

Thanks, it doesn't look as bad as I thought. It would also make it easier to sand if it was gone.

Ok, well today, I got ALL of the spider webbing out. You can't see or feel them....

But now I'm left with 80 grit sanding marks, I followed it up with 180 and 320... it didn't take them away. So I tried 600.... 1000... nothing

Will the primer cover it up? How do I get rid of them? I will get pictures later.

i'm not in any way shape or form even really experience in painting but i believe you could try priming a spot a lottle bit then giving it a good wet sand and see how that turns out just in a spot if not try sanding it again with some finer sand paper

I tried it with 600 and 1000 and all it did was hurt my arm haha, the scratches still remained.

Sand with 180 til the 80 grit marks are out, then with 320 til the 180 marks are gone. At that point you should be ready for epoxy primer and then you will see any imperfections that are left.

If you use water based basecoat, you don't need the flex additive. Some of your real deep scratches may need a thin coat of glazing putty if you can't get them out with sanding.

There not deep at all. I can't feel them with my finger, there just there. I think three coats of primer will cover them. As for the flex additive, this is the clear coat I'm using. Does it have it in it already?

Ready To Spray Acrylic Lacquer Clearcoat
Use with spray gun and compressed air.

http://www.automotivetouchup.com/images/autopaint/RTS-Clearcoat-sm.jpg

Automotive Clearcoat for use over basecoat color.

We carry two types of Clearcoat. Urethane Clearcoat and Acrylic Lacquer Clearcoat. Urethane clearcoat is a two component clearcoat which means 2 parts are mixed together. This product is more flexible, chemical resistant, has better gloss, and will last much longer than lacquer clearcoat. Once the 2 parts are mixed together the product cannot be reused later. Lacquer Clearcoat is a simpler product which is easy to use, easy to buff, extremely quick drying, and can be reused later. View Our Ready To Spray Paint Directions for more information on how to use our clearcoat products. Directions are included. Acrylic lacquer is much easier to apply and is an "air dry" clear. Breathing Respirators are required for these products.

Got it painted... the bumper looks good, no cracking but... where I sanded to get rid of the spider webbing, you can see the marks. Everywhere I painted red, you can just see a little if you get all up on it. I'm picking it up this evening, how should I care for the paint? By that I mean, wet sanding, buffing, polishing, ect ect? Thanks

For future reference a 2k high build primer after the 180 sanding would have leveled it out some. Then its all about hours upon hours of guide coat sanding and filling in the lowest spots with glaze. But it still looks good and Automotive Touchup sells a good product it will last for a long time!

Thanks, yeah, I was hoping the primer I had would hide it but of course it didn't. You can only see it in certain lighting.
